I am looking at getting a 1971 F-100 with a 320 and an automatic transmission. What transmission would have come in this truck? Would it be a c4 c6 or something different? How can I tell which transmission is which?

What automatic transmission can I put behind a 390?
Well if it's a 302 in your truck, chances are that you have a C4 mounted up back there. Is it a 3-speed or 4-speed auto? You can tell also by looking at the pan on the tranny. If it's square, it's a C4 or I think an AOD, if there is an "S" at the back of the pan, it's a C6. The auto you would want behind a 390 would be the C6, but you cannot use one from any other engine family as the FE has it's own bolt pattern.
I currently own the above vehicle and let me say that a modified C6 is recommended as my 390 has punished my stock tranny. Not to say that it cant haul excess of 2200lbs in bed with no problems...uphill!! But I plan to beef up the motor, so the rest of the drivetrain willl need it too.A C6 pan will look like the state of Utah with C6 stamped into the bottom of it...if its original like mine.
usually the C4 is three speed and C6 four speed, as he explained above quite well. Keep on Truckin'
C6.....a 4 speed? I've had several C6's and 4 speeds, but none were in the same transmission. All my C6's were 3 speed automatics. One thing I have noticed on a C6 that I haven't noticed on other transmissions, is a C6 has ribs that run down the bell housing from the engine mating surface edge to the transmission it self.

To my knowledge, the Fords had 3 different automatics available, all of them 3 speed: C4, C6 and FMX.
More than likely, you have the C4 behind the 302. An AOD is possible, but that would have been a "custom" install. Also, there could be a "baby" C6. This too, would have been a "custom" install. These are a little hard to find, and were not put in trucks from the factory (to my knowledge).
For a 390 you want the C6 (if you're intent on keeping an AT). Very strong, but absorbs a lot power to operate.
I have a "mild" 390 (393hp, 437trq) and a stock C6. I pulled the tranny out of a 3/4 ton utility box truck in the wrecking yard. All I've done to it is change the fluid and filter, and put in a reman torque converter. I'm hard on the tranny, and it keeps asking for more.
Ford didn't make a "one size fits all" tranny. Each of Fords engine families have there own specific bellhousing pattern. Only a couple can be crossed over. But those don't effect the current engines in question.
