I kind of like the stock look of the original radio so I would leave it in and mount a new stereo in the glove box or under the seat and hide the speakers.
If I had the stock radio I probably would. The mounting plate or escuscion (sp) is there but the radio is not. That is why I though the head liner idea was good, because I don't want to butcher this truck. I don't want to do anything that can't be undone later if I want to.
Tiger and ***** B,
I agree with both of you. I liked the original look and I also didn't want to do something that I couldn't un-do later. Hence the headliner. I have the original Philco in the dash. It is still hooked up to the one speaker in the center of the dashboard. Still works, too. As far as the radio delete plate, I don't think you are going to find a restoration part. You might have to try e-bay or that junkyard parts on-line website.
I have a 69 and a 71 both with radio delete plates. Haven`t decided to put stock radios in them or not. May leave the deletes in and make a nice under dash ledge/shelf to mount the CD. Will stay away from any cutting and any amount of drilling as I have found out that it is very hard to do a neat job and if I want to change my mind it is hard if not impossible to undo it.
Well I have gone through two JC Whitney catalogs and I cannot find an overhead console/headliner combo for our trucks. If anyone knows where I can get one of these I would appreciate it. With the fuel tank behind the seat and the one speaker in the center of the dash there just really aren't many options for speaker placement. I also think that mounting the stereo here might be better than under the dash. Never done it though.
If you can`t find one build one. There maybe some plans on these forums if you do a search. Also go to some shows if you can`t get the info any where else, somebody must have it. Check around stereo shops, the semi tractor shops ask around, something will turn up. A freind of mine built a console that went from under the bottom of the dash down to the trany hump, it was as wide as the hump. Looked good and give him some more room as it was fairly deep and wide enough for the stereo with speakers on both sides of it. As a bonus he put in a cubby hole under the stereo for more storage.
The overhead console/headliner is called the HighLiner and used to be sold in the JcWhitney catalog, but I have not seen it in a long time. I found them online in a catalog, I think it might have been autokrafters, but if memory serves me they only offered them for 73-79 model, not the 67-72 model. But they seem similar enough, I wonder if it fits?
Cracker289,
You are correct in saying that the name of the Headliner is "Highliner". I didn't realize that JC Whitney stopped selling them. My recollection was that this fit both 67-72 as well as 73-79. The only difference in the two types they sold was that one was pre-drilled for 73-79's and the 67-72's needed to be drilled in the truck.
I saw a radio delete plate in national parts depot catalog, except it was foam and it just slipped into the hole. And it say's ford on it and can be painted to match the dash or spray painted black.
I'm resurrecting this string because the new "Custom Classic Trucks" mag came out yesterday and there was an ad for the Highliner Overhead Console. I'd give the website and such, but I'm not sure if the manufacturer is a FTE Sponsor or even if CC Trucks is. If anyone has a question, you could e-mail me directly.
Hi Carl, I found them in the NPD catalog online last week, so I ordered a print copy of the catalog so I can check it out in my "reading room". hehehe. I did notice it had the same part number for 67-72 as it did for 73-79, so whichever fits one body style fits the other. I subscribe to CCT magazine, but I haven't thumbed through the latest one. I will check out the ad and see which one is selling it for a better price. Thanks for the tip.

Where is a good place in a '67 to "hide" speakers. Other than the one hole in the dash I just can't seem to find a place.
I'm just running with the speakers overhead. I looked, but couldn't find a good spot either. I didn't want to cut my doors. I might reconsider one of these days though.
