Unhappy Tire Time for Supercrew!

I have a 2002 Supercrew cab. I love the truck, but at about 30,000 miles I started to notice a howling noise. I took it to the dealer who said it was the tires and that it was not a warranty issue.

Although I rotate religiously I did it again to see if the sound would change. It did ever so slightly. Now I am at 35,000 miles and the howling is louder and annoying.

I hate to replace tires that have half their tread left just because they have become noisy, but I see no other option.

Can someone tell me if my eperience with these tires is common?

Is there a tire that is quiet and will remain so throughout the life of the tire?

Any recommendations are WELCOME!

I am still using the original tires. They are Good Year Wrangler RT/S, 265/70-17".

Bridgestone Dueller Revos

I've had them on for about 4 months and they are vastly superior to the Goodyears I had on my 01 SuperCrew.

Were they originally the Wrangler RT/S tires? Did you stick with the stock size or go larger?

Check out Tirerack.com. Listed on this site will be all major brands of tires. You will be able to compare brands with one another. In researching this site several months ago when I replaced my Goodyear AT's, I found that the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo was rated very high. I have since purchased the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's. The tires have been fantastic so far, but I am a little concerned over what I believe to be excessive wear for a newer tire. I am not hard on the tires at all, and I maintain rotations at approx 7,000 miles. My Goodyear AT tire was better than the Bridgestone Revo.

I had Goodyear Wrangler RT/S on my Ranger when Ford recalled the Firestone Wilderness tires. I absolutley hated the Wrangler RT/S. They were exactly as you discribe, loud. This was wierd I thought, a RT tire I assumed was more "roady" than an AT tire. But, the RT's were loud. I changed to a Mastercraft Courser AT and I love them. A 255/70R16 for the Ranger and 265/75R16 for the F150, both 50K mile tires. Great tires and fair prices and not really loud. Many people like different tires. This is just my opinion in a tire.

Question Which tire size is best?

I recently bought a 2001 F150 4x4. It has 265/75R/16's on it now. It came from the factory with 255/70R/16's. My milage is not like I hoped it would be. Did the bigger tires have something to do with the milage? I am going to have to put tires on next spring and really don't know which way to go. I don't haul alot of weight nor do I do alot of off roading.

Wink Michelin LTX M/S for me

I have had 5 vehicles with the Goodyear RTS - I had a lot of flats - 6 on one vehicle -- in talking to my tire guy - he said they were one step up from the Firestone Wilderness AT. After much research, I went to the Michelin LTX M/S -- I have had no flats with my Michelins - it rides much better , even my wife noticed - and the winter proformance is great with the siping - I now have them on all my vehicles.

Good luck with your decision -- most anything is better than the RTS's in my experiance

Yes they were the RT/S, terrible tires, no traction. I went with the Revos and stayed with the stock size.

Just a thought

Are you sure it is the tires? Ford had a recall on the limited slip diffs because of whining. Had mine done under warranty. Mine '03 came with Goodrich Long Trail radials. 24k miles and good service

I too have installed the BFG Long trail T/A's. They are a much better tire than the Bad-Year's. They are better in the wet and snow, last longer and are quiter too. Sam's club has a great deal on them.

I have a set of 265/75/17 Bfg all terrains on my 99 4x4 and i love them. They have been great on every surface i have been on. They are great in sand, mud, snow, pavement, and they are not excesively loud on the road. If i didnt drive offroad so much, then i would buy Michelin LTX M/S. They are a great road tire and have seen people get 85,000 miles on them before.(they were more than bald though) They preform well on snow and ice, but where they lack is in mud. If you are going to be driving through alot of mud then i wouldnt sugest them. Those are the two tires i would sugest putting on any 4x2 or 4x4 truck.
Hope this helps

When I purchased my used truck the front tires Goodyear RT/S sounded awfull so the dealership replaced them with the same tire. The dealership said they were good tires and that the front tires must have had a flat spot in them. 15,000 miles later and they are just as noisey as the first set. I will never buy a set of them again.
