Harmonic Balincer Diamater?

Well, a friend of mine offered to help tune my 351M.

Need to find some timing tape. What diameter is the harmonic balancer off the top of someone’s head? I couldn’t really measure it seemed to be 6.5 or about. Then I go look it up and there is 6, 6 3/4, 6 3/8, 7.

Where does the old 351M's like to be set total timing wise and still run 100 degree days?

I have 351M harmonic balancer (1981 Ford F250) on the workbench now. It measures 6.5 inches in diameter.

Perfect.. Thank you very much. I suppose I'm going to have to go with 6 3/8. They don't make a 6 1/2

Does anyone know where I can get an advance curve kit for the duraspark? Tognottis (local shop) doesn't have one listed. They have a kit for fords but it's 68+ I'd imagine that'd be points 'n stuff? Is it the same?

Use one for a ch&*y just use the spings, I put the weakest spings in mine. You do need a good cam and intake, carb, headers for this to work.

Any time you mess with the advance you will need to check your work. The easiest way is to check the distributor on a distributor machine.

You can drive it BUT you need to know what your doing IT WILL KILL THE MOTOR!!!!! And ajust the timing and drive it seval times, IF IT IS SPUDERING DON'T STOMP IT, IT WILL KILL THE MOTOR. And turque1st is right the best way to check it to put it on a machine. Check the spark plugs seval times to.

I do have an edelbrock carb, intake mani, stock cam and headers at the moment (with 2 ½ inch exhaust). The motor is up for a rebuild this year. Although killing it is a bad idea..

Why do I need the good cam and intake and exhaust? I know it can ping while doing this, but why would it sputter and potentially die?

I ment that if it is pinging that it would evechaly burn a hole in a piston, and kill the motor. A good cam will get more air in and out the motor and make more power.
