Question CA smog

I am moving to CA and need to know if my 76 f150 was originally fed or CA truck. The VIN is F15YKB02364.I have checked the vin decoder link but did not find what I was looking for. Any info would be greatly apreciated. I am moving to a rural area that does not require bi-anual smog checks but I do believe that I have to smog to reg. in CA.Thanks

on your vin tag on the door there should be a spot marked DSO. post what that code is and that'll let us know if it's a cal truck or fed emissions truck.
where in cali are you moving to. If it's in northern california then check out that chapter

I looked at my vin tag on the door and I think the DSO is 74. Moving to Sonoma County you've got my vote. Thanks for helping

There should also be a sticker on the valve cover that says where

When I moved there in '91 there was a $300 "environmental impact" (let's cheat out of staters) fee for bringing an out of state vehicle into the state. This was a one time fee above and beyond the registration charges. I don't know if that is still the case ('cause, thank God, I don't live there anymore). If anything I expect it's higher now. Also when they charged that fee, someone walked out of the dmv office to check the vin on the car and look under the hood.

Good luck.

No more environmental impact cost but the 30 year old smog exemption rule just changed on 1/1/05. 76 is not exempt as I had hoped to register my 76 in California. Its a Arizona truck and had tricked out the 390 when I lived in Phoenix. Ive been thanking real hard about coverting it to propane.

your 1976 ford is smog exempt as of today. The smog law actualy changes April 1 2005. So if you get in before that you should be good to go.

Or make it a 75. The vin is on the drivers door and you probably need a full parts truck with title.............

The changing the door to make it a different truck wouldn't work here in phoenix. When I moved to phoenix they had to do an out of state inspection on my truck in order for me to register it here. They would not except the vin on the door because somenone could have just changed the door. They had to take the vin from the frame. However they could not find the vin on the frame so they wouldn't register it. I gave up and finally found it on the frame about 6 months later although you couldn't read a couple of the digits but they let me throught then. But I still had to put catalytic converters and tail pipes on and pass emissions.

I have looked into what is needed to register in CA, but it is very confusing!?!
The truck was owned by my parents (in CA) for many years and passed bi-anual smog
inspections until 2002 when they were told that even though it passed the tailpipe sniffer it did not pass the visual.Thats when I brought it up to WA ,no smog inspections! From what I remember it only needed 2bbl and EGR added to pass ( no cats on GVW 6001 and over).Since I am moving to an area not requiring bi-anual smog checks I will put the 4bbl back.Does anyone know if coming from out of state, will I also need air injection(AIS) and EVAP?
Thanks

the carb may not be california legal. what enigine do you have 390? If it failed the visual then some smog equipment was taken off or fell off or something like that.

I have a 390. I also have a 2bl carb from National Carburetors that is suposed to be CA smog legal for '76 FE.Talked to my buddy in CA that runs a shop and he put me on with his top smog guy.He said to check valve cover emisions label that is not there any more.If I can get one from a FED truck they can smog it acording to the label. Also I cant find any AIS fitings on my stock manifolds and no place for EVAP canister or ports from either tank for EVAP.I realy apreciate all the help I am getting on this.If anyone knows where I can find a new or used label for '76 FED FE truck engine please let me know.
Thanks,Paul
P.S. check my thread in the introductions forum.

On my 76 390, 100% stock and formerly able to pass CA smog checks, there is a 4 bbl holley carb, no egr, no cat, no air injection (smog) pump, no evap cannister.

What it does have is a thermally controlled vacuum valve that switches distributor vacuum advance between ported and manifold vacuum (in case the engine heats up while the A/C is on), and EGR.

Sorry, you can't have my sticker (even if it is still in place).
