Hi, I am new here and have a 1995 Explorer that just got a new refurbished engine and transmission and I have finally gotten it back from the shop. Before the engine died on me my cruise control gave up. I press the on button and then Set/Accel and the speed control light on my dash just flashes and that is it. Anyone got any ideas. I would sure appreciate it. Also, My map lights havent worked for years and they are in the same area with my power moonroof button and on the same display panel with the Temp and direction displays and everything works except map lights. I took it to Ford once and they told me that it was more trouble than it was worth to track down and told me to live without it but I would love to fix it. My husband has checked all of the obvious things such as bulb and fuse and all this is fine. You guys seeem to have alot of great answers even for a non-mechanically inclined person to read! Thanks for any help you can give me on these issues.
Okay guys, I fixed the map lights. But still no cruise control. Also, my 3rd eye tail light doesn't work. I have searched the site but can't find what to do other than fuse checks etc. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks
If you are referring to your third high-mounted brake light, it is not as simple as replacing bulbs. Ford used a neon third brake light assembly in the 95-97 Explorers. When they go out it usually is the ballast located behind the rear hatch interior panel at the top. The ballast used to be about $90 from the dealer. If it is not the ballast, then it may be the light assembly which was about $140 from the dealer and requires removing six rivets in the top of the door. Of course, you want to make sure you are getting voltage to the ballast before replacing expensive parts. Have someone step on the brake pedal while using a volt meter on the wires coming to the ballast. You should have 12 volts when the pedal is applied.
The brake bulbs will definitely shut down the cruise if they're burnt out. I've seen this on a troubleshooting guide. But the guide was only for the 91-94's I believe. I'm not sure if the 3rd light is involved with this either. On my 92 there's a controller mounted above the glove box. (Open the box, squeeze the sides together, let everything fall, and look up inside). A quick trip to the junk yard for a "new" controller and it was fixed.
