This is for a 94 F150, 5.0L, 110K. The tire shop said the ball joints were out so they couldn't align it. One of the other stores had no problem aligning it. Went back to the first to have them check the alignment and they tell me it has memory steer. "What's that?" I say.But the alignment has not changed. He explains it. Oh, ok. I have another steering gear box from an 87 Bronco. Can I just swap them? Are they the same? I don't want to believe these guys 'cause they've already lied a couple of times about this truck. I've also read on here that it could be other parts. Bushings, pitman arm, etc... What do you all think? The memory steer thing is when you turn, the truck wants to keep turning. It won't re-center itself. I recently did the front brakes but I didn't use any lube on the caliper bolts. Could that be causing the problem? Thanks for any help.
You can roadtest the car to see if it really has memory steer. If it does, backing out the steering adjustment screw a little might help. (unless you have some badly worn parts elsewhere, in which case the tire shop might actually be right)
Ball joints could be out of it, other shop might have missed them. Memory steer is usually caused by tight steering components, steering gear wear would cause wandering on the road. Jack it up and remove the tie rods from the knuckles and see if the ball joints are siezed up, should be about the same force to turn.
