Doing it yourself shouldn't be too bad, especially with you wanting it to come out in front of hte wheels. No trickery over the axles, and Ford already brings both pipes over to the right side to run into the stock cat. Just cut it off before that cat after the O2 sensor if applicable, then weld on pipes after that all the way back and do whatever you want afterwards -- dump in front of the rear wheels or whatever you would like.

I dont know what type of muffler shop you went to, but I think you will find that most chains (Wonder, Speedy, Midas) will not do that sort of thing. If they did, they would be more apt to charge an arm and a leg. Find a privately owned shop that does exhaust, and has a bender, tell them what you want, not what they think you should have, and like I said before, tell them your paying in cash. You'll most likely find that they will do just what you want, exactly how you want it, and for a decent price. Even if they say that they wont remove the cats, tell them to put the ones you already have on when they build the exhaust then tear them out when you take it home. Actually to save time going to the parts store, when you pick it up ask them to cutt off a couple of sections of exhaust tubing for you.
