First of Great forum from what i have seen, My name is J.T. ANd live in San Diego 1983 F-250 460BB in her tow and camping rig.
bought this truck for dirt cheap but biggest problem so far is getting over the timeing issues it has when this engine was rebuilt by Previous Owner they did not reinstall the Timing Pointer now I cannot not find anywhere that shows exactly where to mount this beast nd therefore let me get accurate timing figures on it. any help will be greatly appreciated.
the pointer on my 460 is located at about 11 oclock in relation to the harmonic balancer, but you might check out the junk yards for a 460 of that year, and take the pointer off that motor, then you will know where it goes........
I picked up a pointer from thne Stealership so I have the pointer that FOrd says goes on my block but there is no logical mounting place that I can see to put the doggone thing, I am not knowledgable enough of Ford BB to go into a Junkyard and be able to spot one is my problem. any pics of the bolt location that it mounts on would be great
Sorry I don't have a picture to send you, but if you clean the timing marks up on the harmonic balancer, use the 'coat hanger in the spark plug hole", roll the engine so that No. 1 piston is TDC (0 degrees). Now, take your new timing pointer in hand and hold it over the TDC mark and see if some bolt holes line up. Good luck!
Here's a pic of a timing cover with timing pointer installed(rusty thing). There are 2 bolts that hold it on (circled). The upper is a small bolt, unsure of thread size and length and the lower bolt is one of the cover bolts that go all the way through to the block.
Great Info there Ford79 it helped me tremendously, But here is the problem now, Small Threded Hole is there Need to figure out what thread size and depth though, but the Through Hole to the Block you have circled, welllllll. the Hole is sort of there. you can see where it was cast into the Coverplate but it is niether Threaded or bored all the Way through it is just a Dimple. Arghghhhh Now What LOL buddy of mine told me yesterday that some dodges and fords needed to be timed from the Flywheel. my issue there is that there is a cover plate on teh Cover for the flywheel. but my timing light is not long enough to reach under the truck for me to see if the flywheel is marked or not Darned if i do and darned if I dont HUh?>??
Its me again, send me a private message with your address and I will send you an original screw to fit the hole, and if you need to tap it you will know what size to do so.
Hey DeerHunter, Got the bolts you sent to me over the weekend I was out of town, I will be installing them tonight and getting it timed in adn let you know how it works I cant say how much i appreciate the help.
