So 2 cracked flex plates within a year 2 different ford dealers and they can't seem to find out why they are cracking. It's 6" lifted and chiped w/oversize tires. Also after getting it back from the dealer it's hard to start and it doesn't idle up. it will finally start and then run spuradically if you try to press on the accelerator pedal before it is warm it will die. I didn't wait until it was completely warmed up yesterday and put it in reverse it didn't even have enough power to back up a small incline. took it to Ford, maybe they plugged the chip back into the wrong one?? So they re-plugged the chip and said if that doesn't help bring it back and leave it so they can start it when it's cold and see what's going on. Has anyone had this problem? got any ideas on what might be going on or how to solve?
Thanks for any advice I can get.
They connect the trans and the engine together, also the ring gear which is welded to the outside of the flexplate which the starter starter uses to turn the engine over to to start it. they are about 2 feet around & 1/4 inch thick.
they have 4-6 bolts on the out side of the ring connecting it to the torque converter with 8? bolt in a smaller pattern in the center bolting to the crank shaft of the engine. hope the helps, also do a google search for pictures of the flexplate.
hi 99F350, it is a 7.3 V8 powerstroke. and what do you mean frame problem high ho silver? Thanks for replying for sure, we don't want to keep having these problems and the price to fix it is CRAZY!
how is the plate cracking? is it from the center out? or from the outside in? are any of the bolt holes or bolts damaged? and has the torque converter been inspected to see if its in good shape?
You say flex plate I say flywheel. Same thing. I didn't know when you said "flex plate cracking" what a flex plate was. Thought it might be slang for some area of the frame. That's all.
Maybe too much horsepower for stock plate???just an idea. Something warped? trans to engine joining surface not right. B4 the bolts go in the flex plate should fit on the converter squarely or parallel. If you tighten the bolts to bring tension on it thats not gonna work. Damaged damper on the front of the engine causing bad harmonics.
The transmission could be out of spec. When putting together the tranny, there are a number of clearances that will ultimately effect the position of the input shaft. If it's sticking out of the tranny a bit too far, like 20 or 30 thousands more than it's supposed to, the flex plate will be warped into a slight cone shape. It's also very bad for the thrust bearing.
Next time the tranny is off have them check the tranny, and check the cranskshaft runout. If the crankshaft runout is way out of spec, i'd bet the tranny was assembled incorrectly.
Hopefully this is not the case, and if it was, I would push for a new engine and tranny from FORD.
the ford place is closed today so i can't check on the pathway of the cracking, but the last mechanic did say that he could see no reason for the problem. He said the last one was installed correctly and the only thing he could think of was that it was caused from the vibration of normal operation. He said they had a TSB out on this and he made all the upgrades for that. Also they unplugged the chip and it cold starts and runs fine now so that really doesn't make sense. This is what the mechanic wrote on the invoice. "R&R trans found flex plate broken and spacer galled-replaced spacer, eng spacer & flex plate-reinforced plate per TSB 99-23-6 - replaced converter & seal torque flexplate to 40lbs-reassemble & test drive- ok- check for leaks- ok- does that help?
He didn't say why he replaced the converter maybe because the TSB recommended it? Would this be important information to have for prevention of further problems? What questions should i have asked can you tell me? then I can call on Monday and talk to the mechanic and get all the answers. Thanks 99350sd and everyone!
