I'm looking to get 17x8 wheels to run 35x12.5 tires on my 05 250.
I like the American Racing Mojave Polished wheel.
They, and most others I've found, seem to all come with 4.5 backspacing. I've read on some other threads that this may not be enough to keep them from sticking out pretty far - which is not a look I like.
How do you think this setup will work?
What backspacing should I get to keep the tires tucked under nicely without having them rub?
If I need to, where can I get wheels with different backspacing than what seems to be the standard 4.5?
thats wheel and tire package that i like. i asked specifically about the 18x9.5 majave and was told that it would stick out. and that you need 5 or more inches of backspacing.
i did then ask about the 17x8 wheel and the guy at sdhq told me it would not be as bad but he had yet to see it on a truck.
in case your interested, the stock wheels are either the 17 or 18x8 with 5 inch backspacing if that gives you an idea. im thinking they will be 1.5 to 2 inches farther out than stock but this is a quess.
i was going to contact a/r about getting this wheel in a 5 or 5.5 inch backspacing. ill post info soon as i talk to them.
I put 18x8.5 Weld velocity eigh wheels with 5.14" back spacings with Toyo 35x12.50x18 M/Ts on my new 2005. The outer edge of the tire sticks out 1.25 inches from the wheel lip moulding, (looks good). Any more than that and I think it would look foolish, DONT USE 4.5"!!!! It will stick out way to far, Even farther with no wheel lip mouldings. Do your self a big favor and get the proper fit. I saw one guy with 10" wide wheels and 4.5" back spacing on an 05 and it was pitiful looking, not to mention the increased wear and tear. Ever see some dude get their first pair of western boots that are not fit properly, look way to big and wide (BOZO) same prinicipal with wheels on the 05. Good luck
Hey guys... I need some help, Im not sure if I fully understand this whole backspacing thing or not.
Take Baka's wheels for example; 18x8.5 with 5.14" of backspacing. If he would have bought the same wheel with 4.5" of backspacing it would stick out .64" of and inch more. Is this correct?
So, currently his wheels stick out 1.25" then it would stick out 1.86" with a 4.5" backspaced wheel. Is all of this correct?
There area ton of wheels available with a 5" backspacing, and that seems to be plenty. I just went with 315/70 R17 BFG T/A's on Pro-Comp wheels that are backspaced 5", and it looks great. The tires stick out past the fenders slightly, maybe an inch, but not so much that it looks 'goofy'. It seems just about right. In fact, if you went with a 5.5" B/S, it might make the tires tuck under too much!
I picked my tires and wheels through 4wheel parts, and they had a whole bunch with the 5" backspacing.
the problem seems to be on the width of the wheel. i am trying to get a 40x15.50x22 right now i have only found one wheel in a 22 with over 5 inch backspacing it has 5.25 and is a 22x9.5 how do you think this will fit??
4.5 will stick out 90% of your tire from the truck i have tried this.!!!! it just plain looks gross
Just talk to Weld on the phone--interesting that Boyd Coddington is the Pres of Weld--great show! Anyway, they have a wheel for the '05 but tell me it has a 6.5 in. backspacing, 18x8.5--specially built for the Ford F Series. So now I am really confused as to what will work...I guess I am just gonna have to give it a try.
LPEH2! I'll try to post some pics if I can figure out the computer thing. I don't think you need 6.5" back spacing with a 8.5" wide wheel. Mine is 5.14" at 8.5" wide and it looks great both front and rear. Sticks out just a bit, Inch or so,. 6.5 would maybe be correct for a 10" wide wheel.
Seems like American Racing doesn't have anything that fits the new 250/350.
Here's their reply to my email:
Dave,
Thank you for your interest in American Racing.* Unfortunately we do not offer the Mojave with a larger back spacing for your F250 and it cannot be made.* Ford actually changed the offset on the new F250s this year, and because of this we do not have any guaranteed fitments for it.* All of our wheels must be test fitted to ensure a proper fit.* We apologize for the inconvenience.
Regards
American Racing

Subject: Mojave wheel backspacing
I am interested in the Mojave 17x8 wheels for my 2005 F250, but I need more backspacing than the standard 4.5" listed in your online catalog - more in the 5 to 5.5 range.
Do you produce wheels with more backspacing to fit a 2005 F250?
If not available from regular production, do you do custom jobs?
Weld's reply was not much better. They do have 2 chrome wheel choices (I really want polished not chrome):
Nothing in the Weld Racing (polished) line will work w/o a lift kit.* They will go on but stick out.* You would have to go to a 17x10 to get a 5.5” backspace, the 17x8.5 only comes w/4.5” b/s and both would stick out the same.* **********
********** If you not going to lift it you will need to go with something in the EVO line.* (Chrome)* The bolt pattern is 8x170 and you going to need a 40mm to 45mm offset on an 8.5” wide wheel.* I’ve attached our EVO guide for you to look thru.* Currently were only building them in 18” & 20”.* It would be the Cheyenne & Commando for now.
