Post 1986 302 valve covers

I need to change the valve cover gaskets on my '86 F 150. Evidently it is a big job. I can get the side under the air cleaner fairly easy, but the side under the injectors looks hard. Is there anything special I need to do, or are there any special tools I will need? If I succeed in getting them off, are there any adjustments I should make to the valves-the truck has 77K. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks.......

The valves are not adjustable. Just change the gasket, and hope you don't break all the other junk you have to take off to get to it.

Since you'll need to remove the upper intake manifold, you'll need a new gasket (to fit between it and the lower intake). You'll mostly need a 1/2" socket for the bolts (1/4" drive with extensions), with the exception of one smaller headed one and the one infamous Torx. It's a size T40, and it's very tricky. If you use a Torx T40 socket, don't try to use anything larger than a 1/4" drive, as it won't fit down between the two intake runners that the bolt is installed between. After buying a Craftsman 3/8" drive socket in this size and finding out when I got home that it wouldn't fit, I ended up using a cheap Lisle example that just would make it. I may try to replace it with an Allen head bolt, since there are many more options (example: T-handle set screw wrench) that can be used to reach it. This should be about everything, save for the socket to r & r the valve cover bolts. Now might be a good time to remove the throttle body and clean it and the idle air control valve, as well as checking / cleaning the EGR port / valve. If so desired, you'll need new gaskets for these, as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. I may have gotten lucky: I replaced the drivers' side gasket and so far it is not leaking. It was messy enough just doing that one. I am not used to working on a vehicle while standing on a step-ladder. As long as it does not leak I will leave it as is. If I have more problems I will tackle the other one. Thanks again........
