While cruising the highway I have realized a noticeable noise at around 70mph. At 69 it doesnt make this noise. At 70 and over it will make this noise only when I press on the gas, If I dont press the gas it wont make this noise. The noise is kind of like a whistle, but not that high pitched. Just wondering if this noise is something to be worried about, or if it is just the nature of the truck. thanks for any info you guys can provide.
I dont think it is a wind noise bc it only happens when I press on the gas at 70mph or above. It sounds like an engine or transmission noise. I have noticed the noise from day one. The truck has 8600 miles on it and I just thought it was the nature of the truck but I thought it would be a good idea to ask you guys just incase it was something else. I will have to test it some more but I think it only happens in overdrive at 70mph or above.
"Any chance it is the secondary intake runners being opened by the intake manifold runner control?"
I dont know exactly what you are talking about here Brian, any more info on this would be helpful.
The sound doesnt sound like air, its like a whine or a lower pitched whistle but it doesnt sound like air.
Thanks for the info and I will get back to you guys with some more information.
Country,
The IMRC is an electrical solenoid setup that operates a mechanical device to open a secondary set of tubes (runners) in the intake manifold.
The IMRC functions based on engine RPM, not speed of the vehicle.
(Approx. 2400 rpm I believe.)
If you can mash the gas in other gears and not hear the sound then it is not likely the IMRC operating.
Automatic or manual transmission?
Have you tried driving in reverse above 70 mph to see if it makes the same sound?
My 02 whistles from the intake/throttle body area, but only in certain circumstances. It seems to be only at a certain point in the throttle opening. It does it in most every gear, including fifth gear on the highway. It seems to be related to how far the throttle is opened, kinda like blowing into an empty drink bottle. You get the angle right, and you get that annoying whistle. If I push the throttle farther, it stops. If I let off it stops, but if I hold a steady position, it'll whistle all day if it's in the right position.
Well if it only does it when your have the gas all the way down, it must be something to do with the intake or throttle body (including U and L intakes). I don't know what, but that's what I would think. I couldn't tell you what mine does because I have an aftermarket intake that whistles all the time!
I believe I have the same problem as travlnman. I did some more road testing over this past weekend, and it seems like mine is doing about the same as travlnman's truck. Although when my dual exhaust and new intake get installed next weekend it should have a whole different sound. Thanks for the info!!

Well when you get that setup installed you'll never worry about a small whistle again!
