this if the 3rd post in 15 minutes where taking on the fbi has been mentioned. remember waco and ruby ridge? that's what happens to idiots who think they can take on the fbi!!!! are you that much of an idiot where you would put your wife and kids in the line of fire like that moron at ruby ridge did?? or do you think he is some kind of hero?? people that think like that deserve everything that happens to them. if your doing nothing wrong to begin with, then you have nothing to worry about. and don't tell me about losing your rights. this is nothing more than propaganda from the gun nuts instilling histeria upon the public that by losing their machine guns, the gov't is taking everybodys rights away.

first of all, had the makers of the constitution ever dreamed of such weapons, i'm sure it would have been worded different. to keep these types of weapons out of the publics hands.

in a different thread, someone said they took their gun to a gun shop to be repaired, the place was broken into and his gun robbed. if not for the fact that it was broke, it would be in a criminals hands right now. so now his gun is with the atf, and he can't understand why they won't give it back. responsible ownership??? the fact remains, responsible or not, these weapons end up in the wrong hands

Hey guys, among other things, test your back-up systems. My electric water pump quit. No problem I thought, I'll go down in the basememnt a use the hand pump. Well, the hand pump wouldn't pump any water. So I took it back to the store ( I kept the reciept ) and returned it. I am currently looking for a hand pump made somewhere other than China- no luck so far. As for the EMP, I had thought of that, but maybe not far enough. I have an extra ignition module and voltage regulator stored in a heavy metal box in the basement. I had not considered that the alternater will also likely fail. Guess I'd better stash one of those too. And I am going to test run all of my spare parts before stashing them. If Russia (don't think anyone else has the ability )hit us with a big EMP, the military is ready. How do they shield their stuff from the effects ? Do we have any service mechanics on the board that know ? DF

I Cant help you with the EMP stuff but my uncle has enough dryied food to last 5 people untill about 2004 or so. At my house we have 500 gallons of gas and 500 gallons of farm diesel so we can get around for awhile. Plenty of ammo to hunt, and every thing I learned in Boy Scouts

Ultra'Dan, do you think the battery would be affected?
From the little I've read, the effect on higher amperage equip. (like 120/240v power) seems to be from power lines acting like collectors that concentrate the spike.

Anyway, what about generators generally, why did they change to alternators? Was it cost or are alternators really better?

Yeah, come to think of it, I need a hand pump too.
I do have plenty of stuff to get by for about 6 months on. I haven't been hunting, but I would deffinately start before I ran out of food.
Out here, the bigest problem is when the local news announces a storm is comming, all the city people flock to the grocery store and buy up everything. I couldn't get cat litter once after a storm, because the news told people to keep some in their trunk in case they got stuck.
The smart ones, like myself, buy 6 months of whatever, whenever it is on sale. (I have added cat litter on my list of what not to run out of) Then we laugh as we drive by the packed grocery store parking lots.

As far as my Truck, I have a tarp that is fitted to roll out in to a tent on the bed. The poles are under the seats. In addition to automotive tools, I also have a hammer, hand saw, rope, duct tape (who wouldn't?) propane, automatic ignition propane torch, blankets, cookies, first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, hunting knife, extra clothes & foot wear ect.
In the winter I add snow shovels, 80 lb bags of rock salt, (for weight and getting unstuck on ice) and some canned heat.
As it happens, I have used this stuff more for others, than myself.

Basically, the way I understand a EMP burst, is to take all your electronice equip, dump it in a blender and hit puree. That's about the size of it. If your battery is hooked to all the equipment when it hits, I'd say it would be fried as well. The EMP bursts should also damage the battery if it is all by itself. But I am reaching here since I have never experianced one and don't care to.

The burst will destroy even small stuff - not just the big stuff. So the 'puter in you car would be toast, equipement behind the dash, radio, etc.

Oh well guess I better keep my bike chain oiled.

On the backup well pump, I once heard of a one-way valve that goes on the end of a length of PVC, you stick that down your well beside the submersible and stroke it up and down. The valve lets in water on the down stroke and holds it in on the up stroke. Has anyone heard of this? My water table is about 125' and that sounds like a lot of strokin'! But I don't have $400-$600 for a deep well hand pump.
