Sorry if this sounds silly but anybody know how strong they are. I pulled a guy out and used them. I just want to make sure i don't hurt the frame. Gave her a couple of good jerks but all looks fine. Thanks in advance Lance
The tow hooks are very strong , so pulling another car out by them isn't an issue. I was pulling out my buddies truck a few weeks ago with my front tow hooks , and the strap snapped and sent the hook flyin thru my windshield !
After this , I will only pull people out by hooking the strap to my reciever in the BACK of the truck....
what you can do to keep the strap from flying at you is take some rope and wrap it around the strap and through the hooks your connecting to. least then if the strap breaks then it will keep it down.
In addition to what barebackjake said, it's a good idea to keep a heavy blanket, sand bag, or other similar object that can be draped over the strap/cable. This will greatly reduce the chance of a broken strap/cable flying up and injuring bystanders or your truck.
Sorry to hear that joeboost!! Believe it or not the thought of something like that happening had crossed my mind!! Always afraid of something breaking when your in that position. Thanks for all the advice guys i will deffanently remember it!! I do feel better now that i know there plenty strong but think i'll pull from the back from now on. Have a good one!!!
When I started wheelin' a while back I was told by a old timer always to pull out rigs in a foward gear. When I asked why he said that the ring and pinion were designed to have force on one side of the gears (going foward) and not the other. After I thought about it, I understood his point. I have never seen a rig break while pulling in reverse, and even the new superduty commercial shows thousands of pounds of concrete being pulled backwards, but I'll stick by what the old man told me.
The hooks are securely mounted. I sunk my 02 F250 7.3LPSD CC 4x4 all the way up to the doors in mud and water. so factor the wieght of the truck plus the drag created by the mud and water(according to some posts in the 4x4 section of this site it comes out to be around 3 times the weight of the truck) The 13,000lbs wrecker with a 25K Lb winch pulled me out using the front hooks only. I still drug the tow truck back almost 30 ft before I began to move. Maybe a long story but should give you some idea about how well mounted the hooks are.
I've bounced the front-end of a 1-ton dually pulling stumps and trees with a single front hook, even breaking a locking-gate carabiner in the process and bending a 5/8" clevis body. I think the clevis was rated to 9t (static though). Anyhoo, the front hooks have some scratches, but just cosmetic. Ford aught to show one of the superduty trucks hanging from the front hook like in the 150 bed bolts commercial.
