Installing an in-dash DVD somewhere else.

I'm getting an in-dash DVD player and do not want to remove my stock radio.

I had thoughts of cutting the passenger side of the console and mounting it there but also was thinking about the glove box.

Provided it fits in there, see any reason why that could be a bad idea?

Ken,

Actually the glove box would be a great idea. The fact that it's out of sight will be a great theft deterrent.

If you do the install like this, you have to post pictures so we can see the results.

I went to the website of the manufacturer and it said not to install it more than 30° past horizontal. It will be completely vertical in the glovebox.

Looks like I'm gonna be cutting the console.

I does have a removable face, so hopefully that can deter theft

Any particular reason on getting an in-dash DVD player if it's not going in the dash? I'm sure you considered on getting a plain old mobile DVD. Just wondering. My DVD player is mounted in the center console. It required for a bottom portion of the console to be cut out to run the wires to the screens etc..

Just out of curiosity, if it's in-dash by design, and limited to 30 degrees offset, doesn't that suggest that optimal viewing would be achieved from something approximating a straight-on line of sight? That woulnd't be the case down in the console, would it? If course, if your screen goes elsewhere then I'm just blathering. I am curious though.

I forgot to mention, it's mounted completely vertical, I also have a 12 Disc JVC Changer in the console with some space left over. I would go for DVD player that can be mounted vertically.

Okay here's the deal.

I got a 12.1" screen and an indash DVD player off ebay (brand new) for $200.

The screen mounts on the roof.
The DVD player
The indash DVD player is also a radio, CD, MP3 player.
The screen

My first course of action in regards to mobile entertainment is to continue to use my laptop but since this deal was so nice...well...

I planned on cutting the passnger side of the console and putting it on there simply because I was going to tap the power point that is there since i have another in the ashtray. Plus, then my wife (or passenger) can be in charge of loading and unloading DVDs.

I would prefer it somewhere else and may forgo the unit in favor of a PS2. Then I'll be asking where to mount that!

Definitely couldn't pass on that deal!! So since you already have the unit, I'll suggest this to anyone else who might be thinking of locations. Here is the site to the DVD player (PDV-2100) I use which mounts vertically. It's mounted inside the console and up against the wall of the console. Allows for easy loading if no passenger is present and you only have the kids in the back.

Great buy. I don't know the ages of your rear seat passengers, but if you could mount it facing the rear seat, they could take care of it, and control theri own music, then you could listen to what you wanted while they watche or listened the theirs.

My kids are 4,6,8,11. I thought of facing towards the back seat but didn't want to put it under a seat or cut up the back of the console.

I also thought all the way in back...the third seat in a cubby back there...but decided it was too far and running the wires would be harder.

I'm not sure how to wire it up so that the rear seat can listen to the DVD and I can still listen to the radio up front.

Vernon, I'll check out that link you gave me.

Monsta you can go with wireless headphones. I did not install my setup, but I'm sure someone out there can give you the info needed to make it happen. Basically you'll need an Infra-red audio transmitter, on the website I gave you click on headphones or accessories. It will give a general idea on what is needed.

Curious on the 12.1 monitor you bought, is there any possibilty it has infrared audio built into it already?

I am curious if there is a (cheap) way to mount a drop down monitor with the rear ac in my 00 Expy. The vents protrude down from the headliner and it is not flat. Any ideas?

I'll let you know Mike. I'm gonna be putting my own in here shortly. Oh wait...you've got an 00 and i've got an 03. Maybe some can help you out. I'm sure there are plenty of guys with drop down monitors in thier pre-03 Expeditions.

-------------------------------

I found a solution to my problem.

I removed the 2nd row cup holders from the flip down cup holders . The actual cup holders come out quite easily. I then screwed the hinge back onto the door.

The door works like before! So I will be putting the DVD player behind that door. With the cup holders gone, there is lots of clearance. I'm stoked! Can't wait to start cuttin'!!

Who needs cupholders when your kids spill it all over the floor liners anyway!?

OK, I basically have the same question as KentuckyMike. I have a 99 EB that I want to install a flip down unit in, but I also have the rear air ducts going down the center of the roof.

Anyone know of anyway to do this install? Circuit City has a great deal right now on a liquid video 7 in flip down for $299.

Help, I would really like to install it for my kids
