i have a 91 with a 302 and aod....and lately, most recently tonight, i was driving along in the snow, in 4H, and when i backed off the throttle, my transfer case started making a grinding noise, like it was slipping out of gear. you know the kind of noise like when you try to shift a manual transmission without the clutch... anyway, could anyone shed some light on this for me? usually it will stop when i go back on the gas, but sometimes it dosent.
its a manual shift transfer case, and you can feel the noise in the shifter, and sometimes i can pull back on it and it will stop....
im really in the dark here...and i need this vehicle to get me back and forth to work and school every day.
search for Borg warner 1356 I have a post on it and there are a couple others. It doesn't sound good to me, maybe the shift fork, maybe the oil pump. The oil pump is what seems to get wrecked causing the other problems. I guess all this is assuming it is that case. I'm pretty sure it is. Cost me about a grand to fix. A few guys do it themselves. I can't remember who but someone has some great pics in their gallery. Let me see if I can get a link, yeah here we go. http://www.supermotors.org/registry/...id=139&s=13379
Let me know if you have any new info. By the way if its a long ride and you lose four wheel high, shift into four wheel low and you'll still (usually) be able to drive.
