Transmission Trouble
I have a 1991 Bronco XLT with approx. 172k miles on it. The transmission went out a few months ago and I had it rebuilt by a local AAMCO shop. Shortly afterward, my Bronco again started to slip in and out of gear (slipping the hardest on the 1st and 2nd gears). I took my truck back to AAMCO, and they said the problem was that the engine is too old and weak to keep up with - and "communicate properly" - with the rebuilt transmission. They said a (well needed) tune up would alleviate the problem.
So I had my mechanic do a full tune up, and while the engine does run better, the transmission problems have remained. My mechanic said the engine is running fine, that AAMCO is probably trying to misplace the blame on my engine, and that i should take it back.
I want to take it back, but not without some sort of outside knowledge or opinions of what may be going on with my Bronco. I want to minimize my gulllibility in case AAMCO tries to feed me some B.S. when i take my truck back.
So, I just wanted to ask if anyone may have some insight as to what could be causing my transmission problems. Could the transmission be okay and something else be the problem? Or did AAMCO just not to their job?
Thanks,
James

I'm not sure if this other problem applies at all, but when I turn a corner, there is a fairly loud "thunking" sound, as if something is loose and sliding around (maybe). The noise seems to come from the rear of the bronco. I thought it may be a possibility that it could be related to the tranny problem.

However there is one sure thing that you could do to cover your bases. Buy a $35 code reader and pull the codes yourself. This little tool will save you a ton of money and heart-ache. That is if you have a basic understanding of the mechanical workings of your vehicle. They come with a how to booklet. The engine itself would not cause tranny issues however a bad sensor or computer would. Good luck!!!
