I did a search but didnt find info on efi motor, but alot on carbs.
I am getting ready to rebuild my motor, keeping it close to stock. What I would like is just a little bit more torque. what are some mods i should due while rebuilding? Cam recommention? any thing else?
This truck is a 4x4 4 speed. It is mostly going to be used to pull my trail rig ( ranger ext cab.)around from time to time. I am changing the gears from 3.08 to 4.10s.I have thought about swaping motors but the truck has pulled my rig around before. The motor is just tired and need freshen up a bit and needs better gears.
Most of the same mods apply. Head work is probably where your money is best spent. A good port job and a cam will do a lot. The Crane and Comp cams are very poular. You might think about a less restrictive exhaust system. 4.10's are pretty steep, 3.50's or 3.80's might be something tho think about. Matt.
northern rebuild kit
crane powermax truck cam
steel timing gears
headers
3 angle valve job on the head with new seals
no more then .020 over bore if possible
fel pro gasket set
upgrade to a modine 4 core radiator (autozone sells them)
should give a solid rebuilt with lots of torque and still realitily stock idle and get good-decent milage
optikal illushun, you wouldn't happen to know the p/n for that 4-core radiator would you? all of the ones that I found (for my '84) were the crappy 2-core. I ended up using the larger one for towing/AC, etc (its still a 2-core though).
I was looking at the northern kits the other day and thought they would be the way to go.
I have the dual exhaust stock manifolds with 2 1/2" exhaust
I already have a 4 core. got it when i was thinking about doing the V8 swap.
The reason for the 4.10s --I already have a a complete rear axle with 4.10's in it, it would be cheaper to just buy the front gears instead of 2 sets. I would like 3.73's but was looking at ways to save some $$$ and put the savings into the motor.
I have a spare 300 setting in the garage i was thinking about rebuilding it, it had 260,000 on it when we pulled it out, the one in the truck has about the same mileage on it. The shop has done the head already and the block has been checked out. They said it need to be bored 30 and should be good to go. they told me the crank and cam bearing will be ok as standard.
One other question- Is it still possible to find the emmission senors and computer crap to replace it as I do this. This way everything would be new and fresh when put back together. I know that on my ranger alot of the stuff is no longer aviable. but its a 84.
Thanks again hopefully if it warms up I will get this done. Mike
Advanced auto, Auto Zoo, or any local parts store should have what u need. i would first test each to see if it needs replacing so u can save some $$. but thats just me. good luck.
ordered the rebuild kit from northern today, they adjusted the cost and removed the cam. Ordered the powermax cam from local dealer it was cheaper through them.
head being done now, block ended up having to be 30 over.
so if all goes well and it warms up out side I should have it done before long.
