I am buying a 1985 Ford F-250 4X4 with the 6.9 diesel motor from a friend of mine. This is the second truck he has owned of this type and year. He has been constantly plagued by starter problems on both trucks. He has replaced starter after starter, and even replaced the flywheel on this one. He told me this is an apparent problem they all have. Sometimes they start, and sometimes they don't. Is this true? If so, what can be done so I don't do through starters every 4 or 5 months?
Thanks in advance,
Todd

Reason: Not enough info
First advice would be very good 800-1000 CCA batteries (required) then check all cables ends for corrosion, clean all attachment points for positive and negative cables. The cables to the starter have been known to wear and short on the frame. The starter speed for a cold start is about 100 rpm and 200 rpm for a hot start, basically if you can count it's revolutions it's too slow.
The next would be get the starter tested if it is bad, get the Mitsubishi gear reduction starter from Autozone about $130usd with lifetime warranty.
If the batteries and cables are up to par, the next thing to look at is the glow plug system. If it is not right then you have to crank the engine to much to start it. The starters on the 6.9 and 7.3 are sensitive to to much cranking. They overheat, a small puff of magic white smoke appears and then it is time for a new starter.
