man i wish i had the inspectors that you have. i have been wiring house for over 10 years in northern illinois, the far west suburbs of chicago and also the farm communites that are out side of there. i have never seen an inspector just slap a sticker on a house around here. heck i have had to put an extra outlet in cause i was 1" over the 12 foot rule on outlets. i have had jobs flunked cause conduit was stapped 6" past the mininum point. electricity is nothing to mess around with. i have seen the damage it can do. i have seen the fires that it creates. anyone can run wires from box to box. but hooking up the switches correctly and using the correct wire size to breaker is the important thing. also ,god forbid, if a fire does start and it is blamed on the electrical most insurance companies will NOT cover it if the work was not done by a licensed electrician or if it is not inspected. just some food for thought. electricity is like a snake. know how to handle it and respect it and you won't get bit. when in dought have the pros step in and do it for you. i sure wouldn't try to drill out my own cavity and fill it or give myself knee replacement surgery.
In no way did I mean to imply that professional electricians can't be trusted. I am just saying that the inspection process is for your own protection and, in most places, is the law. You should use it, not bypass it.
I also have no doubt that you can do the simple work you described. Just make sure you do it properly, that's all.
Hey if you have a digital camera why not take a picture of your "box" and post it. That way at least we can see what you are talking about when you mention all of the wires and whatnot as it is hard to tell from your description what your situation is.
If the people here felt comfortable with knowing what you have there now I am sure they would offer you good meaningful advice. It is just that from your information it is really hard to know what you have there.
