Any idea of what to use for thicknesses on the tubing and channel? I was thinking 3/16" for the flatbed frame and 1/8" for the headache rack. Any ideas? Thanks

That'd be fine. 1/8" is what NASCAR uses for the the tubing on their cars, so I think it's plenty strong. 3/16" would also be strong enough for the flatbed frame. All the ones I've seen are that thick or thinner.

Hey Stryder
If you STILL want an 8 1/2' bed, make sure to use another piece of channel from bedframe to bedfram to weld the 6" piece of sheet to for support.
Just an after thought...

I got to thinking about that as well. I think I will play with that one as i go. Everything comes is 20' sticks so I can change if I need to, and I was planning on getting a little extra anyway to fab some sort of bumper. I could still get way with 2 sheet of tread plate because I'm thinking of making a small toolbox across the front for chains/straps/binders/etc. I'll just use some of the 18ga. I have laying around. Thanks for the help!

Make sure to post pics when you're all done. Kinda like to see how my brain-fart of an idea turns out in real life...

hey guys i am also building a flat bed for my '58 i found these guys for the side rails. http://www.flemingmetal.com/truck-bo...cket-rails.htm
i have also talked to the local welding shop they have a 14 foot break and will bend me up what ever size i want for the bed sides. might also want to think about adding extra support on the under side to attach toolboxes. i am building storage boxes between the cab and rear tire.

Can't promise a date in the near future, but will definitly post pics when its done. I hope to be able to start it next month. Gotta finish a few project that require some form of a bed before I can tear off the old box. I'll probably get the steel next week or so.

do a ebay search for "Ford factory layout manual" or
"ford truck body builders layout book"

the books are out there

Smile Flatbed Prints....Hope this helps!

I have 3 Flatbed 3D models and some simplified prints. It would require some work to give you detailed prints.

I uploaded the 3D models to my FTP for you. It will require a viewer that's free from Solidworks. Viewer Link: SolidWorks :: Free CAD Software Downloads from SolidWorks (eDrawings works with AutoCAD, Solidworks and other popular CAD programs, download the others if you like.)

Model Links: Index of /3d/Flatbed The *.edrw files are interactive prints. Click on "Home" to see the page print, "Sheet #" to see each page, "Play" or " Next" to see each vie in the print, "stop" and used the cross section or rotate and zoom features.. The *easm files are assembly files that can be rotated, measured, exploded, etc... All can be be viewed with the eDrawings program.

Flatbed print

Thought you'ld like to see how the flatbed was used.

eDrawings File

eDrawings - [Tank]
Web Page File that installs eDrawings:

You will have to cycle through to the "Complete" configuration to see the whole (incomplete by the way..) model. Or the "Detail" configuration to see the doors open. Use the "Cross Section" feature to see inside or right click and "Hide" features to see the whole construction. The other configurations were for MFG purposes.

Oh well, I guess I wasn't paying attention. Maybe someone looking can use the prints anyway.
