Flatbed Blueprints

Anyone know where I can find online blueprints for building my own pickup flatbed, preferably one that allows for a hideway goosehitch? Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure I can build one for less than the $12-1400 for a new one.

Thanks

Why not start with a clean piece of paper and design your own ?

I may have the talent to piece and weld one together, but I have NO talent for drawing. That's why I'm looking for drawings. Most of my projects have been rather simple to date: shelves, benches, blasting cabinet, etc. Nothing on this scale. Sure, I've welded mainframes for Deere and Vermeer Mfg. but there again, I had the blueprints to do so.
I have looked for used ones in the junkyards, but they usually want full price as well.

Locate a truck deck supplier, check to get an idea of the design/construction. Get brochers, pics and what info you can obtain, a local library will help. That should get a start on the project and a idea of the material list for you to price the total cost . If you can piece /weld then just take your time, lay it out and if it looks good tack it together. See that everything fits like it should and weld it up. The main thought should be to plan it out before buying material to be sure of getting the right lenghts and the proper size/strenth steel. I was lucky in that the steel supplier had knowledgeable staff to assist in the selection and some of the design. Shop around until a helpful, knowledgeable supplier is found, they are out there. Also check your newspaper for tradesman ads, some may help in the lay out for a small fee which could save alot of aggravation ,wasted materials and expense. Good luck and keep us posted.

When looking at flatbeds and trailers don't look at new ones. Look at old ones and see what materials have held up.

What year/model truck are you looking to put a flatbed on? That will make a difference.

Bring your digital camera and tape measure with you. A few pictures and a couple of measurements are all you need.

Have you checked your local papers for something used? Around here you can always find an old truck with a body on it for cheap! May need some work but that is also an option.

I've found only a hand full of used ones. Couple in a junkyard and a couple still on trucks. In all cases, they were priced like they were gold plated! It's going on my '90 F250 4x. The box is getting pretty beatup and its acquired a few new holes from cancer. I would look into another truck, but I've got way too much money and time in this one.
Thanks for the ideas guy! Its really appreciated! I'll try my luck at taking pics and measurements. Probably would have better luck during this at the junkyard, seeing how the dealers would prefer you buy their new one.

Thanks again!

If you buy an old truck with a deck you may recover some/most of your investment by reselling the parts you don`t need or even the rest of the truck.

Thanks for the site Binder! Mudder, actually one about like the picture at the web site above. Definitely one with a steel deck. That would be awesome! When you have it, PM me and I'll send my email ad.

Thanks a million!

MoMudder720, same size as a standard long box would be great. If memory serves it 6.5ft wide and 8.5ft long. Not sure about exact measurement for the rack, but about a few inches above the roof of the cab should be enough for anything long to not hit my clearance lights. I usually haul 20ft pcs of angle and bar stock so that one is really important.

Binder, I'm in Wayland, IA. About 15miles North of Mt. Pleasant, IA or 45 miles from Keokuk.

Thanks again guys!

Hey Stryder
Check out my gallery, under 'stuff i'm proud of', flatbed and headache rack. I'd probably suggest staying with an 8' bed, since steel comes in 4x8 sheets.
