Greetings,
I'm new on the list but it looks very informative. Anyway, I'll be brief. I live in Arizona and just purchased my parents 1981 Ford F150 (dual gas tanks) with a 351 Windsor. They drove it very little (112,000 original miles on it) and took really good care of it.
Anyway, they live in Oklahoma so I drove there, picked it up and returned to Arizona.
This morning I ran it thorugh Emissions and it passed everything but the Pressure Test. The gentleman explained that they pinch off the canister and seal the two gas tanks and take a pressure reading. Their conclusion was it wasn't holding pressure.
They said I need a mechanic to take a look at it by doing a 'smoke' test in the system with only a 1/2 lb of pressure. They said that anything more won't allow the mechanic to locate and repair the problem.
Can someone tell me what this may cost me? The truck is in fantastic shape and has all the original emissions equipment on it.

We are pleased you have chosen the best source for Fords!
See you on the boards.
What they are doing is testing the EVAP system (the system that removes evaporated fuel from the tanks) and pumping smoke into the system. Where there is a leak, the smoke will show up. The diagnosis might be kinda pricey, I'm not sure how much, but I should think at least $50 if you take it to a dealer, less if you go with an independent shop.
