Arizona Emission Test

I'm looking at moving from Tennessee to Phoenix, Az. I have been reading about having to do a snap test and check for smoke. Both of my 6.0 Excursions have egr cooler deleted and sct gearhead SRL tunes. My 03 has the cat hollowed out also. Is there anything I really need to worry about? Should I start looking at getting egr coolers soon if we decide to move? Thanks for any info.

Since you are moving to eastern LA probably you will. In tucson the test is no big deal as it is tail pipe only, cant say what they do in LALA land as that is a totally different part of the state, well you can put pretty much all of western az in the catagory, but that is another issue. I dont think they really know what they are looking at here as it takes about 3 seconds after they open the hood to close it. They mainly want the $$, the cat is another visual just to see if installed. Best would be to try to pass and see how it goes I guess unless someone from up there chimes in. Or go to the state page and ask there.

IDK about the EGR delete, I'm sure that unless they really know what they are looking for then they shouldn't bother you too much. They will check to see if you have a CAT, but as long as you have the shell or hollowed out one, you will be fine. As far as the snap & tailpipe test just make sure you don't "punch" the throttle when you get the green, just roll into it then let off, you'll be fine.

I live in Southern Nevada where they do the visual inspection and put the sniffer in the tailpipe while on the dino. A few years ago I watch a straight piped Ford 7.3L pass with no problems.. in the past 9 years I have had 2 guys look for a CAT and never look for the egr cooler.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I may sell the 05 excursion before we move and then just wait until we get there and worry about the 03 then. Plus I think the hollowed out cat should pass visual and just have to see if they look for egr cooler. I was mainly wondering if I needed to worry about the cat because I could easily find one around here that someone wants to sell because there is no testing here. Thanks again.

What works in your state or county today may not be the same tomorrow. That's why I leave mine stock. Everyone has to make their own decisions.

Exactly plus it depends on the employees who test your truck. Some don't seem to care and others do their jobs correctly.

Thats no fun though! If I had to leave it stock I would have to sell it or live somewhere else.

Maybe it's just me that thought this: but aren't you moving to: "somewhere else", and that is why you asked the question...??!

What I meant by somewhere else is either start doing emission testing and have to leave it stock. Then, that's when we would have to sell it or move somewhere else. We have the opportunity to move and have family there and was just curious how it was. We are deciding where to live by choice not due to work or anything else.

Hey thanks! I forgot about that. I checked out the Tennessee chapter before but didn't get much traffic and never went back and forgot about it. Thanks for the tip.

If you do sell the Ex depending on the color I may know someone that would like a look see.

On the tail pipe testing. If you have a muffler they can't use a probe to see if the Kat is
hollowed out or not.

My truck has the cooler in place but it;s a BPD cooker and the EGR is only turned off.
If I need it on that is easy enough to do.

No offense but, a truck isn't going to be the determining factor of where I live. Family is more important. To each his own.
