What type of scan tool code reader do you recommend ?

I am looking for recommendations on a scan tool/ code reader. I have no problems with my 2001 Expy, but have an EVAP system problem with my 1996 S10 Blazer. features I want are IM readiness monitors, ablitity to read generic and specific codes, ability to read sensors outputs. Features I do not need CAN ready, programming for more HP, Also would like to spend no more than $250. All replies appreciated

I use the elm device from scantool[dot]net. It works quite well, and is very affordable.

If you have a laptop or notebook computer then I highly recommend the BR Diagnose program. You can download this for free. You will need to buy the cable for the serial port connection to the ODB plug. This costs $96 but the program can run various tests of your system and also pull codes and clear them. It checks O2 sensors and allows you to display gauge readings on the cpu so that you can see the readings while away from the dash. I use it on my 97 XJ and my Expy. This is compatible with Ford, GM, and Chrysler products. I am not too sure about the imports. I found out that I have a bad catalytic converter on Bank 1 and will be having replaced this week at the dealer. I'll do an edit and post the address shortly or you can use a search engine and put in BR diagnostic and look though the results. This is the harness with the necessary ends on it it.

I have to admit that I am new at this, but so far I am real pleased with the Actron P9145, has generic code descriptions in the display, and includes a cd that will give you make specific code descriptions, costs is a little more though, about 280 plus tax at autozone,
