My 97 has a 2.3 engine. Sometimes it will stutter and stall, but other times it will run fine. When it is acting up and you push the gas most of the time it will bog down. After it bogs down if you hold the gas it will backfire through the intake. Sometimes while riding down the road I can try to accelerate, and it feels like it has no power. I had the computer scanned and it did not show any sensors or anything wrong. PLEASE HELP if you might know the answer to my problem. THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLY.
i had a ranger, a 88 one time with a 2.9 that acted just as yours does. and it was the timing chain, jumped two teeth. ran and drove, but had fits! with no power. replaced the chain and she was good as new!!!my advice , get rid of wind up you got, and go v-8. you'll love it and so will your truck. and its sooo much easier to work on...

thats another thing to check, timing.
deranged, yours has a timing belt, though, on the front of the engine. pull the rubber plug on the outer timing cover and get the marks to line up on the cam pulley and the crank pulley at the same time.
how many miles are on the engine? has the timing belt ever been changed?
the ranger,
thats an awesome looking truck you got there. do you have any pics of the engine and all the mods you've done? there have been a lot of people on this forum wanting to convert their stock rangers to V8 rangers. looks like we know where to direct them now.
