Bogging down problem..ideas?

Hi. Thank you in advance for your help.

I have a 1997 F-150 2WD Lariat 3rd door 4.6L V-8. Its been bogging down, heavily at times.

Symptoms- Starts fine. Idles perfectly when cold. Once warm, it has a little hiccup regularly when idling. During normal acceleration, it bogs like its missing, heavier when going up an incline. During the bogging, it has intermittent moments when it clears up and lunges forward for a millisecond but continues to bog. At highway speeds, its hard to keep at speed without major bucking and shaking whenever I barely press the gas pedal. At times when going up a steep incline at lower speeds, it bogs so bad it feels like I won't make it up.

New plug wires and plugs a year ago, and new intake manifold gasket 3 months ago (before that it had been down to 5 or 6 cyl, with the fouled plugs. This time the symptoms feel completely different).

If you need more info, just ask! And thank you...

Curt

That would mean during that time there were 2 or 3 cylinders dumping raw gas into the cylinders that was not burning. That recipe is a disaster for a catalytic convertor. If I suspect a plugged cat I loosen the two nuts that hold the exhaust pipe to the manifold...creating a leak. If it revs up easily I have my culprit. Don't drive around like that and kill yourself from exhaust fumes.

Thanks for the idea Spotty, but I have a curveball for you- no cat on this truck. Was taken out during last exhaust work. More ideas?

Don't you get a CEL when all that is going on?

Sure do. I'm getting quite used to seeing it. I haven't been driving it much lately though. I just ordered a fuel filter; figured I'd try that since it doesn't cost much.

That's neat.
The system is telling you a fault exists and you ignor it!
What is the code setting the CEL?

Keep your snarky comments to yourself Bluegrass. I didn't "ignor" anything. I'm no mechanic and I don't have a code reader. I also live in a very rural area and my truck is a long way from somewhere that has one.

My post is on here to ask for advice on what to look for from people who know a lot more than me, not to solicit smart*** comments from you. If you don't want to offer advice, then please keep to yourself. I can always look for advice elsewhere and it won't bother me one iota.

You really need to get something to read codes. The OBD is telling you what is wrong, you just need to access it. Where are you buying the fuel filter? They might have one you can hook up right in the parking lot and read the codes. You can buy basic code readers for less than $30.00 now. Not real fancy, but at least gives you the code number which you then could Goggle.
