Reason: title change
I had the same exact thing happen on my 02 Expedition. At first, it was an intermittent flash, then it was a constant flash. Speedo was acting funny and the trans was shifting horribly. Took it to the dealer and they found one of the modules inside the trans to be bad. They replaced it and no more problems. This was 2 years ago.
Same Thing Happened To My Brothers 2000 F-350 Diesel. Bad Module Inside The Transmission, Had It Changed And Has Not Had A Problem Since. It Had 70,000 Miles On It When It Happened.
I have an 02 w/ 7.3 and mine has done that twice. 10,000 & 48,000 both times it was a module I believe, both times only when I was towing. Ford say's not to worry, but I think it has something to do with the torque converters with the diesel, haven't heard of it happening with the V-10.
I once had similar issues with a 7.3 PSD in my work cube van. The vehicle was new and this was a very frustrating problem.....O/D lights flashing...the trans shifting whenever it wanted to and not when it should. I was driving 55 and it downshifted to a much lower gear just out of the blue! My problem was even easier.....turned out to be that someone forgot to tighten the grounding cable bolt to the frame when the body was installed! A few turns of the wrench and all of those problems went away forever. Sometimes it is the really simple things in life that frustrate us the most.
Good luck with yours.
