The brake warning light on my dash is lit constantly. I read in the Chilton's manual that this indicates a leak when the brake pedal is pushed. The light stays on constantly, so I was wondering if this indicated some other type of problem. I checked the resevoir and the front(smaller) bay was empty. I filled it back up, and the brakes are working normally. It has been cold and wet outside, so I haven't had a chance to check for a leak yet. Will the light go out when I fix the light, or do I have to reset it in some way?
Thanks,

P.S.- I drive a '85 F-150
This might be it? I have a 86 F-150 and the return spring on the Emergency brake pedal is shoot, my brake light stays on until I give it a little nudge with my foot, I really should get a new spring. However, if your E-brake pedal is fine, it might be the switch.
Its Worth trying.
There is a centering switch inside the brake proportioning valve inside the frame rail under the booster. It trips the light if your brakes are unbalanced due to a fluid leak. If you have recently replaced a wheel cylinder, or bled the brakes for any reason, it can be offcenter. The Haynes shop manual explains how to bleed the brakes to recenter the switch, but you should make SURE you've fixed the leak before wasting some time on it.
I have the same problem on my '82 when the ignition switch does not snap back fully in place. The previous owner warned me about this and even gave me the replacement part from Ford to fix it. They never got around to it and I probably won't either (you just have to nudge it back a bit). When this happens, my blinkers and gauges also do not work so that is always a sign that the switch is stuck.
I assume this is not your problem since you don't mention blinkers etc.
Thanks for the info. I'll climb underneath and trace all the brake lines out to make sure there are no leaks. I have a Chilton's manual, but it doesn't say anything about recentering the switch, all it talks about is bleeding the lines. I'll probably try bleeding the lines to see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks

It's obvious you have a leak in the rear system. The resevoir going dry is not normal, and the brake light did as it was designed to do. It made you aware you have a problem.
