Hi, I'm new here. It seems you all have a grip on Ford engines, which is what I need. My son and I are redoing the 302 in that was in his BroncoII. What was originally going to be a cam/intake swap now has evolved into a complete teardown - about 2 days before we were going to start, it lost oil pressure. Low on funds now after buying so many new parts, and of course we keep finding more things wrong. The last item to be dealt with - the heads. Was in the process of reworking them, only to discover the guides are shot. Here's my question - can I put later model 5.0 heads on the '68 block? I have several sets of heads from Mustang GT roller cam engines. They're in decent shape. The engine from the BroncoII was a Jasper 302 spec'd for a '68 F-100 - hence all the '68 parts. Can't spend much more money, the '68 heads are unuseable, and we need to get this thing running again ASAP. If I can use the later heads, what is needed part-wise for the conversion? Sorry for the long message, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you don't get a response in this forum, try the 302 forum, listed as 221 260 289 302 351w V8. You will get guys that have these engines and have a lot of knowledge about them.
I finally got ahold of a guy I know that is a ford guru - he does alot of r&d work for Edelbrock (did the r&d work for the very first Edelbrock 460 Aluminum heads) and he knows smallblocks - he said they would work, but to double check 'geometry' - make sure the pushrods work exactly as they should as far as where they make the rockers contact the valve stems. I'm thinking that is a bit involved for right now.
I have done this very swap a couple times. Basicly, the short answer is, yes. To elaborate a little, as long as you arent racing on them or doing a lot of high revs(over like 4500 RPM) then you should be fine. I would make a switch to hardened steel pushrods though. As the people above stated, check the heads once on for all geometry. Make sure the pushrods don't come out of their cups(I dont know what size cam your running) make sure the springs dont bind and make sure the pushrods dont rub on the top and/or bottom of their respective holes in the heads. But, like I said, I have done it a couple times. Basicly, the diff is the roller lifters, so you'll have to use the original length pushrods for the motor. Anything else?
the E-7 heads off the mustangs will bolt right on and are a decent stock head and have room for porting!just a tip on the stang heads, the 2 emission holes on the back of them need to be blocked of,i have used 1/2 inch freeze plugs with a lil' locktite and worked every time
Thanks for all the input. I decided to go ahead and use late model heads - but I switched to a set of gt40p's. They should be here thurs. or fri. Read alot of good things about them, found a set at a decent price. Just couldn't find an older set that didn't need alot of work just to make them useable, before any port tricks were even tried. I'm aware of the header issues with the p's - I have a mig, a sawzall and 4 sets of used headers.
Make absolute sure you can get exhaust manifolds or headers that will fit the gt40-p in your application. I have seen several people have to pay for custom headers to make the 40-p work. The plugs come out ot the "P" head totally different than any other ford 5.0 head. The plugs are straight, almost like some of the race heads. I can almost guarantee your stock manifolds wont work. Thas the reason the "P" heads are so cheap. Having said all that, I use lots of them, I just make sure in advance I can get Headers for whatever I am putting them in. To my knowledge, the only stock exhaust manifold that will fit them is 97 explorer 5.0. Its a hard header to build because none of the Ford headers are even close, except some ot the Ford racing headers built for the head.
