I'm doing work on my 8.8 Bronco rear end and I want to put in a locker. it currently has the original 3.55 gears and I was just wondering if I have to have both gears and a locker or just one or the other, because I was also looking at putting in 4.10 gears but wasn't sure weather i need to put in both or with a locker act as the gears? I am confused on how it works please help.
P.S. does anyone know how many splines my rear end has? it's an 85 Bronco with an 8.8, all original rear end. I know its either 31 or 28 and am just hoping I can find out without taking it apart and counting lol. thanks

A locker is a traction device, gears get the truck moving. (basically) You can change to 4.10's and use the same carrier that the 3.55's are on. You can also put a locking carrier (locker) in with the 3.55 gears, but I'd get new gears. The rear should be 31 spline. My 86 F150 and 89 Bronco both were 31 spline. Cars are 28.
You'll also have to change the gears in the front too. You also need a new carrier for the front because they have two types, up to 3.73 and 3.90 and up. I saw an ad in 4 Wheeler mag for a dana limited slip for $200. You can get just an empty carrier and reuse your old spider gears too. It's about $60.
You'll also need bearings and seals and someone who knows how to put it togeather.
