My 84 f-150 did not come with a tach. After all the stuff ive done I would like to have one BUT have no idea how to hook one up. Is it easy and are there any good brands or a certin tach i should buy?
I put a 4 inch VDO on my '84 f-150 with out a tach and it is AWESOME got it from summit for 50 bucks it has a black housing and a white face hook up is easy 1/2 hour job.
I have a 78' ford f150 and I installed a 4" autometer tach. I mounted it on the dashboard off to the far left, I love it! Usually the tachs I have seen have four wires, there is a ground, illumination, power, and one more wire that goes to the coil. There should be a spot on your coil that is labeled "tach" you just stick the wire up in there and your done, pretty easy. Good luck!
for almost all aftermarket tach's you have 4 wires
red: 12v switched power supply
black: 12v negative ground
white: wire this into your dash lights
green: this is the actual lead that tells the tach when the
motor fires, on your truck tap into the negative
Side of the coil.
The green wire can go to the tach feed to the OE instrument cluster. You don't have to run thru the firewall again. It's already there & waiting for you.
