yeah check your timing and dump 1/4 of a quart of some atf down the carb with it revved up. then drive it. you may have carbon build up that is igniting the fuel. the atf won't hurt anything, just have it revved so it won't choke out. it will smoke for a few minutes.
the timing has to be set with the spout connector "unplugged".
If it was set with the spout connector plugged in the timing is actually retarded.
I have an 88 f150 with efi and TFI ignition ( thats the distributor with the module that is attached to the side of the distributor)
My spout connector is at the dist, part of the wiring harness that goes to the TFI module. There are 2 wires that run next to each other with a jumper at the end of it that jumps the two wires together. It a plastic thing-a-ma-jig that pulls out and is easy to lose or misplace. Also I ve have two sets of timing marks on the block. I use the ones on the pass side of the block. I"m not sure if yours will be the same.
If the tiiming was set properly then the next thing I might consider is that its running rich like that carb might have a problem. Is the exhaust odor really nasty almost enough to cause your eyes to burn?
no connector it has been wired to a after market plug.. found out it is the secnod wire. but no diff in timing with or without it ..only one set of timing marks on the passenger side..timing is showing at 10 % btdc with or without the wire connected .no oder from exhaust unless you are 6 in from the tailpipe and it is not the bad
the parts inside the distributor move when the spout is unplugged and hooked back up, i don't know what you are refering to when you say the marks are right but if the parts inside the dizzy are advanced you will have problems setting the timing. that is why you need the spout unhooked to set the timing then hook it back afterwards.
