Running lean is my guess. Long time full power will cause it also.

X2 on the lean mixture. I'm not 100% but I think your timing being off can cause this as well.

It could also be caused by an overly rich mixture or late (retarded) ignition timing.

My last '93 Lightning lit up the manifolds and all 4 converters a few times before I finally tracked down the problem...... bad PIP in the distributor. When it acted up the truck lost power, like no fuel. Turns out it was effed up spark timing caused by the PIP.

Strangely enough I never got an error code when the truck was running this bad.

I thought a rich mixture would only cause excess heat at the converter, but not before. Am I mistaken here?

Incorrect plug wire routing can cause that as well.

EDIT: By incorrect routing, I mean placing the wrong wire on the plug (I.E. #1 wire on #2 cylinder's plug).

I had the problem with my 93 mustang when I rebuilt the motor. I had a defective fuel pressure regulator and my fuel pressure was over 50lbs so it was running way rich. Had my headers glowing red within a few minutes.
