V10 vs. Diesel
You know some of you guys are soooo damn petty and have your heads so far up your asses that you cant even have a simple converstaion without makeing this , a my truck is better than your truck type a deal. Just ANSWETR THE F#@!ING QUESTIONS AND LEAVE YOUR sh%#@Y EGOS ON YOUR TRUCK BED!!! -->

They are all good trucks and everyone of those guys are happy.
The only thing I know that could be bad about the V-10 (in the Dallas market anyway) is the dealers aren't even giving low wholesale on trade. MPG's is the issue. They can't sell 'em in the big city...have to get them out to the country folks that drive low miles.
Absolutley stole the '02 for my buddy who will only drive it about 5,000 miles/year, mostly to the cattle market. The Dallas dealer couldn't have been happier to let her go to a buyer before it went to auction.
Personally...I always wanted a PSD...had the chance so I got one...
25% need...75% want...100% 'cause I could.
I can honestly say that I would have been just as happy with the V-10...who knows, maybe in about 85,000 more miles I will.
It is always a personal choice...the main thing is that you stick with the SuperDuty...best truck overall on the road today.
On a side note I am just a little curious...'cause I just like to know the perameters I am supposed operate under...is the SuperDuty forum, here @ FTE, a family based site? Just wondering? If it's not it will be a good place for me to "cut loose" from time to time.
MPG: I really don't think this is a good basis for facts. Everybody drives different, heck at times my PSD got 24mpg w/a empty bed and pulling a 16 ft car hauler trailer with four 600 lb each ATVs thru and over the high passes in Colorado & with four of us in the truck & all of the other stuff we brought along.
Put the lighter weight pop-up overhead camper(1800 lbs) on w/the same trailer in tow & the MPG went down fast to 11mpg avg.
Running empty & here at the higher elevations (7,500 ft + ) I avg 18 mpg.
I also noticed that my PSD always did better on MPG if I refilled at a Truck Stop vs the local Gas Stations.
My MPG also improved after I did the following to my PSD, run the fan switch to the right sde of the "off"( Never use Vent), took off the bug deflector, switched to all-season tires & installed a Pyrometer (Exhaust temp) Gauge, I also did the boost & transmission gauges as well. The "Sweet" exhaust temp on the PSD is 600 degrees for both the 7.3 & the 6.0L engines, this is where you will get your best MPG but you can't know the exhaust temps w/o the Pyrometer (EGT) gauge. The EGT gauge also comes in handy to alert you the operator as to when it is safe to shut down the PSD after the EGT temp drops down to the 2-300 degree range.
Engine oil changes (every 3000 miles) I did myself to help keep $ cost down along with the fuel filter changes(25,000 miles), which were not bad on the 7.3L PSD but more costly on the New 6.0L.
Needed new batteries(2) almost eactly at the 60 month the truck was old, Autozone had them in stock.
The 7.3L PSD's came with the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty for the Diesel engine & when you past the standard 3yr/36000 mile warranty then all that was needed was $100 per pop to fix the ill PSD up to that magic max year or 100,000 miles. I never had to use it.
Overall, I can agree that if plan to haul/pull/drive your Superduty everday, then the PSD is a great investment.
If you don't need your Superduty as a everyday hauler/or for overall lower mileage then I too will be happy with the mighty V10 gasser.
Either engine is an winner.
Your words...
"And I and our Left coast buddy over there have only been asking for two years for a head to head - one in California and one here in Texus to settle it once and for all - but nary a V-10 taker yet !!!
guess they just post their boasts - and don't come out to play "
Just an observation, but you seem to have a need to prove the mighty diesel is better.
Funny though... I re-read every post here and I am a big pro gasser poster on other fourms. I find it very hard to find any V10 owner ever claiming power, weight, hauling or any other V10 superiority.
As a owner of a fleet of Ford trucks I tend to see MOST of the V10 MPG claims (11-13mpg average empty) and (7-10mph heavy) as fairly consistently posted. Not too many wild 17+mpg claims.
I also have owned personnaly and professionally several examples of the 7.3 and 6.0 PSD and can categorically state that many posts about the average MPG seem to be a tad inflated base on my personal experiance and my company fuel usage records. I never could get near 18+mpg out of the PSDs we have. I also find it suspect all the Diesel ownrs who claim 75,000 or higher miles with no problems....I WISH!
Bottom line bud, is that you will probably never get a serious bite on your competiton between a PSD and a V10 because most of us Gas V10 owners are comfortable with our manhood and don't need to prove that saving $5000 was the right thing, we already know it.
haveing 4.30 gears really help out alot
I swear by my v10 excursion
I too want a diesel, but aint in a rush. I really cant justify the need for it yet though
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
V10 vs PSD there is only one question you have to ask yourself!! How many miles are you going to put on the truck per year!! Both motors are fine motors but if you are putting over 30,000 miles a year the Smoker will kill the gasser on cost basis!! Diesel is, on average 10% less than Regular gas (or over the last 9 years that I have owned Diesels) and Most V10 owners wish they averaged 13 MPG!! That's another 23% increase in cost savings!!
Just using simple numbers!!
193,859 / 13 = 14912.23 X $2.00 per Gal = $29,824.46 GAS
193,859 / 16 = 12116.18 X $1.80 per Gal = $21,809.13 DIESEL
I have saved $8,015.33 in fuel alone in the last 3 1/2 years!!
It all boils down to how many miles you are going to put on your truck a year!!
Currently I have a 89 F-450 with the IDI on winter fuel it sees at best 10mpg I had a 88 F-450 with 460 gas it was a heavier truck got 8mpg.
I figured it out my 460 burned 6 dollars of fuel per hour where my diesel is 4 dollars per hour on summer fuel.
If you used the truck to make your living with I can see buying a diesel or if you put alot of mileage on the truck I can see diesel be worth it. I bet most people never put enough miles on a truck to pay for the extra cost of the diesel engine. When the engine blows up your looking at 8-10 grand to replace it where a gas engine would be max 5 grand.
Its your choice on what you buy and how long you keep your trucks most people in this area keep trucks for 4-5 years then trade them in (gas or diesel) the trucks have a maximum of 250,000kms (155,350miles).
Most gas or diesel trucks in this area can be considered junk when they hit 350,000kms (217,000 miles) because the truck usually needs a engine replacement. Never seen a PSD,IDI or gasser make it that far usually 300,000kms (186,000kms) they crap out. If the truck has a automatic transmission its probably been rebuilt once the rear axle is most likey needing attention. Tires last about 18,000kms (11,185miles) on a diesel P/U which are Michelin LTX M/S at 200 dollars each.

I dont regret the deal one bit,,between the 3 trucks, the V-10 truck is the only one that has not been back to the stealership to fix something, this is the way a truck is suppose to be,,,no problems.
I agree if your putting on mega miles and hauling trailers alot,,the diesel will prob be smart,,,,,,,,,But let me tell ya,,these V-10's with 4:30's,and the 6-speed, are no slouch, ,,I know,,I have owned both ! I did drive a 6.0, 6-speed, cab&chassi, but was only and XL,( not what I wanted),,before the deal,,and while it did crank,,,I could feel the shudder in the driveline,,just like my 99' had, and how that engine is packed in there,,,I passed on it !
Buy what ya want,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Later,,,,,,,,,,,,,Ma rk
