Hello all
I was doing a bit more research on my VIN today and stumbled across a discrepancy between two web sites.
One site told me that M color code for 65 f100 was Wembledon white the other says corinthian white. Is there a good VIN site out there that is accurate?
Also Axle code 08 is 3:50 to 1?
Thanks
Jon

Hiya ...the codes are as follows.... Yes on the answer to your rear axle ratio code question...paint in Wimboldon white....code M paint part number is DL60-1619...Thats from my 65 parts book...covers 65 models only....Wimboldon was used for many many years....well into the 70's across the board...cars,truck.....Pure White is code C...DL60-1525...all paint part numbers have a suffix dash letter of A after the 4 digit number....
according to my master parts book circa 1-69, wimboldon is same code number as what is called in there as white....A suffix is for 3oz size,C is for qt size and S is for 6oz spray btw...it shows corinthian white being used 60-63, code is DL601238-Awhite(wimboldon is used 64 up)pure white(code C) is used 63-up.
question.....from what I have seen over the yrs, arent the off white colored dashes the same shade....whats your thought on it folks ????
On my 65(and jds' too) would the dash color be wimboldon white...the slight off white color....I say yes....let me know guys....
jd, I hope this answers your question....whereabouts are you located at, as i recall i wanna say you are in Seattle area.....let me know as i am in the area....
I'm glad to hear it I have allready purchased some Wimboldon white and have been spraying parts before assembly. What a relief.
Also My dash is a beautiful red it has been that way since new. It is in such great shape that it will be the only part left alone..
I was told by someone my gears were 3:70 so I bought a set of 3:30 to get a bit more mileage. Do you think they will help now, knowing that they are 3:50? Also do you know how to adjust the speedometer once you change gears?
Thanks again
Jon

You seem to have a good source, care to share? If you don't mind looking it up, do you happen to have the ratios for my manual granny tranny. The numbers on the tag on the side read as follows.
Code 08 for 1965 is a 3.50 to 1 ratio. You will se an improvement with the 3.30 gears, but not much. As for the speedo gear, you have to change the gear on the cable where it goes into the tranny. It goes by tire size, rear ratio, and tranny to look them up properly. An easy way is to see how far it's off after you change gears by driving a measured mile( if you can find one!) and seeing how many tenths of a mile it's off. If it's on the minus side of a mile, you use one tooth more, if more , then you can increase teeth. Most are using between 17 and 21 teeth gears. 18-19 are most common. I do have a speedo gear book from ford if you list all the info.
jd...It took me a while to find your tag code but i got it....says that trans used on 1/2 & 3/4 ton except 4WD 6 & 8 cyl, 7 tooth speedo drive gear before unit 684,001(production unit number...last six of VIN)
Assy date of trans is 3-29-65, 435 denotes NP model number...
The F5 is New Process ID of Ford production part number
The C5TA is Fords part numbering system...C= 1960's production
5= 1965 yr build/design level made
T=truck part
A=...i wanna say axle or assembly, not sure...
7003 is Ford basic part number...transmission assembly, E is that units revision level
So your box is about 3 months older then my 435...mine is a 7-1-65 prod date, yet vin say build is early June.... I go by the trans tag as i knows its original unit.
The "A" denotes an engineering part number. It keeps it separate from the actual part number. Ford's engineering dept. uses these. All dealers are periodically issued crossover books to convert these to actual part number.
Barry....I was wondering as I know for ex c5tb the b is body, and c5tz, the z is a sevice part...I dont recall what the A is, I know the suffix letter is revision level and is key, from what I have heard from dealers, etc as to correct ID of a part....
I've always dealt with the numbers with the "Z" on the end as being in parts for so many years. We were always taught the rest were engineering numbers, good for crossing over to find the exact part number. Yes, the suffix is for revisions. The higher the letter in the alphabet, the more design changes it's had. I know the "E" is for engines, "A" may be driveline. The new prefixes are awful, you can't tell a year as to it's fit As you work long enough with them, you can tell models. I hate them ( XF1Z prefix) They did it to re-align parts with the rest of thier world operations. It's really tough on the guys who are still doing parts. I loved doing parts, but hated the dealer mentality. Give me the pre 73 stuff any day!!
