What is the condition of the tranny fluid, how many miles are on the truck, and does it slip into second gear?

Try changing the filter and fluid, and if there is supposed to be an o-ring on the filter, make sure it is there. Also, make sure the fluid level is correct, not over or under. It sounds like it is aerated, and these trannys are really sensitive to that. A fluid and filter change alone should be around 5-7 quarts, while it will be around 13 if you drain the converter.
