I have a 86 F150 302 EFI. I would like to get some brushed aluminum valve covers for my truck. I am going to have this truck painted and I have most of my exterior parts and now I am looking for dress up items under the hood. Have done some searching but no luck yet. I can find plenty for carb. models buy can't seem to find any for the EFI model. Has anyone found a place that makes or sells these or do they even exist. Any info. would be appreciated.
Update on the valve covers. I tried Motorhaven and couln't find anything but I did find some somewhere else. Just want to make clear that I'm not bashing Motorhaven, they have a lot a great parts. The place I did find these is PAW (www.pawengineparts.com). They list these specifically for EFI trucks. The ad states "For 5.0L/302 & 5.8L/351 Truck". They do show specifically for 86-93 models and probably have other years as well. Polished is $139.95 and Black satin finish is $124.95. Just thought I would throw this out there for anyone else looking for these. If anyone else can give any more info. or other places to buy these please post it. Thanks guys.
The valve covers I found were Ford Motorsport valve covers. I think this is why they are a little higher. I would love to find some cheaper if you or someone else could point me in the right direction. The Motorsport covers really look nice though with the logo on them.
Most of the ones I've seen have labels that specifically note "Not for EFI". I've asked around the forums, and I've been told that the concern has to do with the proper holes for the PCV valve and oil filler / breather. I would also imagine that the EFI covers may have been designed to have a lower profile and clear the upper intake on the passenger's side. Honestly, I cannot see any other difference. I was running into a few concerns, as I'm installing a set of FRPP roller rockers in an '85 302 EFI and I know I'll be needing a taller set of covers to clear them, or else be prepared to remove the baffles from my stock ones and have very tight clearances inside (if I could even get by with this). At any rate, I was hitting sticker shock at the cost of the "EFI" covers. I found a set in the Summit Racing catalog (their own house brand) advertised for $69.99 in plain. I've got a set on hand, and they seem to be decent quality, though I'll have to knock out a cover plate for the oil fill, and possibly drill another hole or two. It's worth the difference in price for the trouble, though. I'm hoping that the upper manifold and pipe will clear. If not, I guess I'll be installing a spacer. Hope this helps!
If you are modifying/making holes in valve covers for the pcv valve, make sure you rig a baffle in the cover like the factory did, or your engine will burn oil like crazy.
Restorit, sounds like you have a little work ahead of you which is what I didn't want. I just want the bolt on covers without having to modify. By the way, I checked Summit Racing and they also have the Motorsport covers but they are a little higher ($144.95 for the black satin finish), these were listed for EFI trucks. I forgot to add that my PAW catalog is from 2000 so the prices may have gone up a little since then. Thanks for the info.
I can't say I blame you one bit! Honestly, I was hoping my stock covers would work with the roller rockers. FWIW, the plain aluminum Summit covers I picked up (manufactured by Wysco Products, according to the box) do not have any holes drilled, but do have the reliefs inside each cover (one at each end) to direct you as to where to drill them should you need to. I took a close look at them today, and each internal relief does have bosses made into the cover which are drilled and tapped for bolt-on baffles, two of which are included with each cover. Now if I can just work out any clearance issues with the upper intake!
If you are not adding aftermarket roller lifters and such the stock short covers will work fine. The mustangs came with shorter than older models with carbs, you should be able to pick up a set at any bone yard. You may even find the motoersport aluminum ones, if not the stock stang covers were aluminum, just painted gray, they look great polished.
I have an 86" with a 302 EFI and it had Alluminum valve cover on it from Elderbrock, But just a week ago I cracked one after overtightening one of the bolts. I picked up a cheap set of crome ones from Advanced auto (Ford small block) for $42.00 and they fit over my roller rockers. And the holes lined up perfect. You can tell their not real exspensive, but I needed something quick, I had oil running all over my headers. Now that their on it doesn't look to bad. If you just want something shinny these would work fine.
