Transmission swap
I have a 1986 Ford F350 Crew cab, Dually with a 460, 4 speed and a 4.10 rear. My problem is in 4th gear on the highway, at 60 mph, the engine is sounds like it working to hard. Several people have suggested that I put larger tires on the truck to help correct this problem. But I am still leaning toward a transmission change. I am wondering if it is possible to replace the 4 speed with a newer 6 speed transmission. If so what would need to be changed?

Do a price comparison between an add-on overdrive unit, and finding a 6 speed that will work. I bet it will be close. Plus the overdrive will give you 8 speeds.
