I'm thinking about getting a third generation Explorer and I'm wondering what kind of gas mileage I could expect. I definately want four wheel or all wheel drive, I drive about 80% on the interstate and I only tow a light trailer occasionally.

Hello We bought a 2002 in Dec and we are getting about 15-16 mpg in town and around 20 on the interstate. My wife drove it from Ga to Colorado for Christmas. This thing has been great. We have the 4.6 V8 with 4 wheel drive. Good luck Brian
Mixed 50-50 highway & town 17 mpg. Seems like it used to be closer to 20, But its winter and we are burning 10% blended ethanol. I have V6 with 3.55 gears. Hopefully mileage will increase this spring.
I have an 02 V6 4x4 that we've owned since new and we exceed 20 mpg on trips but high teens around the area (small town/country) and neither my wife nor I are granny type drivers. The Explorer is usually just a tweak more efficient than my 03 4x4 Ranger V6, particularly on the highway. We live in Ohio too and rely on the snow tackling ability.
Costs me about $20 for gas to get to work and back in a week. So I'm only spending about $1000 a year in gas. Insurance is about $1000 year and the truck will probably depreciate $3000 in a year, so the gas is still a small part of the cost of ownership.
If I got a toyota corolla, I'd still spend $600 on gas, $800 on insurance, and it may only depreciate maybe $2000.
So it's more expensive to own the truck, but the cost of an extra $400 in gas is a small concern to me.
