hey guys,i dont know anything about the fe motors but i recently inherited a 76 f250 and i dont know whats in it.i read somewhere that the 352 stamped on it doesnt mean anything.does it even mean it is a FE motor?one thing i noticed that ive never seen on a ford motor is that the water pump is set off the block like a chebby.how can i tell what i got?thanks guys.
well, the 352 indicates you have an FE engine. Being a 76, odds are you have a 360 or a 390 in a truck. Other FEs possible, if somebody did a swap. I don't thin 428s were still being used in 76.
If you think or know it's original, the VIN number will ID your engine.
All that aside. The best way to determine what you have is measure the stroke or ID the crank. Cheak out the FAQ in this forum for some useful info on FE engines.
thanks guys,im not sure if the motor is original or not so i dont know if the vin # will help or not.i dont have the truck handy right now anyways.if the # dont help,is there anyway to tell with the motor still in the truck?any external casting #S?thanks
the stroke will get you most of what you need. There are a few variations on bore size as well. but, the stroke will give you a pretty good idea what you have.
If your new toy is a 4x4, then you can pretty much be safe that it's a 360, that's what went into the 4x's... No external markings will tell you what's inside, the stroke of the crank is the key and chances are you will have either the 3.5 or the 3.75. If you come up with something different let us know, your only other chance answer would be 3.984 and that would be a 410 or 428.
