I have a 390 with about 11,000 miles since rebuilt and have been running Val. 20w50 since I live in Fort Worth, Tx summers are pretty hot. This is the first winter its seen. Do you guys think it would be better to run 10w30 or run a synthetic blend 20w50 for winter. Would the blended oil cause oil leaks to form. Engine has no leaks currently just sepage around oil pan gasket. Thanks Guys?
I have run 10W-40 oil in all my FE's year round in the Northwest. I live within 50 miles of the Canadian border and it was 0 degrees F this morning. It can get up to 100 in the summer, but not for very long. The synthetic blend would be good and it should cause no oil leak issues.
I live in Canada and it was minus 34 here this morning (-31F) My 390 start without plugging it in to around -20 with 5W40 in it. But I preffer to use 0W30 year round, but it is harder to get now.
Use 10W-30 in the winter, and 15W-40 in the summer. I like Mobil 1 Syn. Only run the best motor oil in your engine, why risk a nice FE with inferior oil?
Think about this, 85 percent of engine wear occurs at startup and at -20 deg F it take more than 3 minutes for the oil to reach yhe rockers with 10W30 oil. That ids why I stick with the 0W?? or 5W?? year round.
I agree 20w-50 is good for a worn bearing engine, but with small clearances, use like a 10w30 or 10w40. I would not recommend going below a 5w-30 for where you live, because youll not see as cold of winters as Say the Northern US, I ran 10w-30 in my 390 and at 10 below, it started fine. Just dont overrev the engine until it warms up a tad, the shaft rockers dont need much oil anyways, so dont worry about that.
as long as the oil pump is good it won't take more than a few seconds to get ooil up to the rockers
I am affraid that is not true, it depends on the oil viscosity, pour point and temprature. The oil pump cannot pump what it cannot suck up in the pickup tube. Lab testing from Texaco says 3 and half minutes to the rockers at minus 20 with there 10-30 oil.
