Alternator Mega Fuse

I was working on a friends car last night (I know, but I have read trucks have them too), and I learned that Ford started putting mega fuses between the alternator and battery. His was blown, and his problem.

When did ford start doing this. What is the purpose? Protect the battery if the alterantor fails?

Ford has done this a long time, but used to use fusible links instead. Now they use the mega fuses. The only time I have ever seen the fusible link blow is when someone works on the alternator without disconnecting the battery. Might this be your case too?

It could have been. I am not sure. I was brought in on the tail end of that job.
