The upper 175 amp mega fuse melted last night on my 1998 f-150. Not sure what caused it, but the left cable coming into the fuse was a little loose. I had the junction box off the truck about 10 months ago due to having to remove the passenger side valve cover - do you all think maybe I didn't get it tight enough and that's what caused it to melt?
Any thing else I should check before putting a new fuse in?
The fuse melted the small black box that it bolts into. Can I get the mega fuse at advance or auto zone or would I need to get this directly from ford? Also can I get the little black box from advance or auto zone?
To blow a 175 amp fuse would have been a dead short on the load side of the fuse.
175 amps is a lot of power.
Look for the burn mark close by where it shorted to ground.
If it was a cable, the cable would have melted the insulation and or burned and would need to be replaced because there is no cables/harness etc except the start cables that will survive 175 amp current flow..
Good luck.
Was it blown or melted? If it was melted, yes a loose connection will arc and make a lot of heat. If it was blown, no that is not it. Like he said, a 175 amp draw should be obvious. That would make "magic smoke" of most stuff. I don't know what goes to that fuse for sure, but I would check the alternator, starter, and cables. Not too much uses anywhere close to that much power.
