Lot's of discussion on this one in the past. Has anyone been able to get rid of the body mount popping noises sucessfully on a long term basis? And a new question - mine have been popping for almost five years now even after several tightenings - my X was produced in November of 1999 - less popping now than with the 10 leaf springs I used to run, but still popping - when will they just break or will they just keep popping away?
I can't speak for X's, but my SD has popped since new, and I really didn't used to think much of it. Now my mounts are creaking, popping, and groaning from the slightest amount of body flex (opening a door, entering & exiting the truck, moving around in your seat, etc.) I mainly attribute this to the regular off-road trips I take my truck on (although it's pretty tame offroading,) and at my old job, I used to drive up & over a 14" concrete curb almost daily to take a shortcut from the employee parking lot to the front door.
First, the mount under the drivers floorboard began popping. I tried tightening, loosening, and lubircating the bolt & mount. Everything I did just make the noise worse. Now I've got the drivers front & rear, and the pass. rear mounts creaking & squeaking.
I've got a set of new Daystar poly mounts on order, and I'll update when they ship them to me.
Thanks for the info. Outside of the body - you basically have the same truck I do - V10, 4.30 and 295's. It's just the front mounts on mine, but man they go crazy off road. Fortunately I don't off road much anymore, but when I do they drive me nuts. Let me know if the poly kit helps. Good luck.
I cut the bump stops off at the second bellows to gain more articulation and the popping went away. Maybe the spring was hitting against the bump stop and tweaking the body putting stress on the body mount???
I got the poly mounts installed today, and my truck is finally quiet!! I had to take it to a shop to get them put on, I just couldn't get the upper & lower mounts to separate. I didn't get a chance to talk to the mech. who worked on my truck, but it looks like they used a LOT of WD-40, and some sort of puller. I can see 'footmarks' of some tool that was clamped around the frame ear of the body mount.
I got the set (Daystar bushings btw) off of rockymountainsusp.com. . .they don't have a listing for X's, but I would think a P/U and X's would use the same type of mounts for the front.
I'm sure you've looked at this already, but did you take a gander at your swaybar end-links?? I thought this was the source of my popping when only the front mounts were making noise. Turns out it was the endlinks were shot and making their own popping noises, besides the ones coming from the body mounts.
And you can't really tell if the endlinks are shot while they are on the truck. While trying to diagnose my clunking in the front end, we double and triple checked everything. Everything was tight. As a last resort, my mechanic removed the front sway bar and test drove the X. The clunking was gone. Reinstalled it and the noise was back. New end links and the problem was solved. But again, everything appeared tight on the ground and on the lift.
I took into Ford a few times for it when it was under warrenty. They tried new body mounts but didnlt help. The last time they replaced the bolt on the swaybar end. Fixed the problem; for a while. Now it is back and getting worse.
I would suggest replacing both end links. One end of the end link has a captive bolt in a ball joint. When we replaced mine, both bolts were very sloppy in the ball joints. The replacement parts were very solid. But you can't replace the bolts alone as they are captive. The links were about $50 apiece.
Double true on what rozette has posted about the endlink bolt. Actually, one of the 'seals', or balljoints, on one endlink was ruptured and most of the grease inside was gone. New set of swaybar endlinks cost me $85 from the dealership.
Nope - it's the body mounts - you can feel it in your feet. I have six inches of clearance between the bump stops and springs - lifted truck.
I have the same problem in 03 X. Took it to dealer and after replacing a worn front end part and lubing body mounts etc., still had problem. They called Ford hotline and they said to install special shims between body and mounts.Taking it in tomorrow to have it done. We'll see if this fixes the problem.

My Ford dealer installed shims between the body mounts and body. Fixed the poping noise.
