In short, the 2500HD is the 3500 in single rear wheel form.
Now, the 2500 got dumped, the 2500 HD is only a 3/4-ton (heh, only), and the 3500 is both SRW and DRW.
Oh yeah, the 1500HD got dumped and GM spent money on R&D to make a true competitor for the Screw. ABout time....even if their engines drink loads of oil and knock.

The HD happened because Chevy had to redesign the frame to accomodate the Allison Transmission. As mentioned before, it's basically a 1-Ton frame. None of the engines available in the HD series have been affected by piston-slap or excessive oil consumption- that honor belongs to the 4800/5300 out of the half ton (oil consumption is resolved, and the piston-slap isn't any worse than what Ford experiences in the 4.6/5.4 mod engines). Probably get flamed for that, but it's true.
NO! it is not true by any means
I know of 3 HD 8.1's and 1 6.0HD and ALL use a quart od oil every 750 miles ans knock like crazy below 50* on startup for about a minute
and the best part is they are 04's I "Thought GM supposedly fixed it by then".NOT

I keep reading about these problems, but not seeing them in our shop, which really has me scratching my head. We deliver about 60-70 new Silverados a month (and about the same in Ford F-series), so a persistent problem would be pretty easy to identify.
If, in fact, those conditions exist on those engines, they would generate a replacement under warranty claim, assuming the mileage is still under warranty.
why did chevy make the 1500HD and 2500LD?
i mean a heavy half and a light three-quarter ton? aren't they about basically the same thing? seems like a waste of money to me.

The 1500HD is a complete mystery. The 2500 had a 8600 lb GVW, so that was what we used to call a HD 3/4T. Truthfully, I think the whole HD series was a response to Ford's SD trucks.
Yes, they are the same thing - the 1500HD was the crewcab version of the 2500LD. If it was a regular or extended cab, it was a 2500, but if it was a crewcab, it was a 1500HD. Don't ask me why.
The 1500HD and the 2500 are both on eight hole wheels and have a semi floating rear axle. The 2500HD and 3500 are also on eight hole wheels, but they have a full floating rear axle.
