This morning when trying to go to work, I noticed my truck wasnt changing gears. When I look at the gauges, my speedo and odometer were not working. I foundfuse #8 blown and keeps blowing out when I put another one in. What would cause this. Last thing I did was install side steps on saturday and it has aslo been raining a whole lot. I havent drove the truck since Friday.
Did the side steps mount to the frame? There is a wire harness on the inside of the drives side frame that has the wires that go to the speedo pickup in the rearend. I'd start looking at where your bolts went through. LET US KNOW.
No, the steps are body mounted to those flanges that hang down. One of the big fuses for the chime was very hot to the touch. Is that normal or could that have something to do with it
No there is a short somewheres and it seems odd that it happened after you installed the side steps. Anyway i'd work my way along that harness to see if its pinched somewheres. Also there is a harnes under the rug by the drivers seat under the black trim which is right above those flanges you mounted to.
okay, after pulling out the hot fuse and letting it sit for about 10 minutes, i put it back in and them my chime started working again. It did spark a few when putting it back it. Since the chime started working, I tried the fuse again for the speedo. No spark this time and the fuse did not blow. Now everything works. What can cause this problem? Could it have been the rain and maybe leaked somewhere and shorting something out. Please let me know if anyone can solve this mystery as I do not want it to happen again.
I think you have a wire or two that are nicked and the water is causeing the short, we had a police car that did this and took us for ever to find it, for once the car dried out it worked fine but go through the rain it would die. We would run the car on the hoist and spray one area at a time with water until it died. Anyway turned out to be a screw that went into a wire harness that nicked a couple wires.
After driving the truck around, I noticed that my dome light is on and will not turn off. And my alarm is telling me that my door is open when it is not. This is really ****ing me off. Does anyone know if there are wire right above the piece that hangs down under the truck where the steps mount.
Bossind is right. You've nicked a wire and it is causing your problems. If my memory serves me correctly the dome light wire travels down your door post from the dome light. Then the wires go down under the carpet and plastic trim piece at the bottom of your door. I'm pretty convinced you screwed into a bundle of wires. Trust me the bronco is full of wire bundles and it's not hard to find a set by screw or drill bit. Be patient and be sure to weather proof your wire fix and make a good connection. I personally prefer soldering my connections and seal it with heat shrink tubing. Keep us posted.
Okay,
I finally fixed the problem. Bossind was right. I did drill into a bundle of wires. Sorry Bossind for not understanding where you were talking about the first time about where the wires were. I was rushing and missed it. Well I did solder a few of the wire that were chewed up. There were about 4 wires that were all shorting together. Thanks guys. This site is the best
