I'm new to the diesel world and was wondering about the engine/block heater on my 95 psd. I plugged mine in a few nights ago when the temp dropped into the teens at night. When I got in the next morning I thought the temp gauge would show some change, but it was down where it normally is. It seemed to take just as long for the heater to start blowing hot air as normal. Is there any way to check and see if its working right. It doesn't get that cold for long periods of time here, but it would still be nice to have.
i have an 02 and mine will read at the cold "line" on the water temp.. without block heater it will read a little under the line on start up. i wouldnt think it would make the vents blow hot air yet. the main thing i notice is the truck will take a considerable amount of miles less for the truck to get to running temp. if its in the teens when you start it up without problems i would assume your heater is working.. the one time i tried starting mine without being plugged in, in that kind of weather it took a few cranks and sounded like it had a monster lift cam in it the first few seconds.
WHen I plug my truck in, I wait a few seconds and listen for the crackling sound as the block heater heats up, not to mention there is an arv when you unplug as well.
As for the temp guage being warmer or your truck blowing warmer right off the bat because it was plugged in, that will only happen if you have your truck plugged it and it isn't that cold out.
My truck might warm up a little faster after having been plugged in, but the biggest indicator I notice is the ease in starting. Plugged in truck = easier starting. We often reach minus 25 - 30 celcius here in the winter time, pluggin in is a must here.
