Hi, this is my first time on your site so I would like to start by saying hello. I have an 04 f250 6.0 diesel 6 speed 4x4 regular cab xlt. I am running a MAC intake, magnaflow turbo back stainless exhaust ( no muffler, straight pipe) and the edge with attitude engine system. The truck runs great but I think I am making to much boost; the folks at edge told me that you should not go over 30 psi max on a 6.0 diesel. The way my truck is set up now I have reached boost levels as high as 36 psi. I can hit 30 psi without even going 3/4 throttle. I was thinking that putting a muffler on my truck might make a bit of differance and help to keep my boost levels a little lower, but I am not sure what I should do. Any help you guys could give me would be greatly apprciated.
Your truck has an exhaust back pressure sensor which feeds exhaust pressure info to the PCM which in turn controls the variable vanes of the turbo. The variable vanes tend to move to the closed position in low exhaust pressure situations. Your problem could be a VGT actuator, EP sensor or your exhaust is so wide open that the vanes in your turbo close to help create the back pressure it is expecting. When the vanes close, the vanes direct exhaust flow onto the turbine wheel creating more rpm and boost.
I will undoubtedly get some arguement on this, but that is the way the system works.

Welcome to the only family Ford Truck site, on the net. The members in this forum are very knowledgeable about these engines; they will eagerly help you…with your question. If you have a minute check out the Guidelines, it will help to understand more about FTE and how it operates.
Personally, I don't think that 36 PSI is going to hurt anything. There have been other threads on here that have talked about high boost and between that and the info. I have learned from my experiences this engine can handle up to 40 PSI at short bursts and possibly a little higher, but not without blowing off intercooler hoses and causing damage to internal components. Too much boost will eventually cause bearing wear and failure or piston rod failure and wrist pin failure, but I don't think that 36 PSI is going to cause those kinds of problems.
Great to have another 6spd driver!! I'm actually a greenhorn when it comes to these here diesels. I'm learnin though. Doesn't the Edge w/Attitude have five or six positions for selectable power gains? Do you reach 30psi+ on the next lower setting? Now it's all up to you. Self control. I look at it this way. It sounds like your set up is running perfect? But it's developing too much boost and too much power? You're complaining? The Edge/Attitude controler has programable setpoints for maximum EGT's right? Is there a limiter for boost? Just a thought. (Maybe something to ask Edge for.)
When you develop that much boost, pulling under load, do you experience clutch slipage?
First off, thanks for all your replys. In reply to steve, there is no such think as to much power!! I am just concerned about the longevity of my engine. I can reach those hi boost levels with the edge set on level 1. When i go to levels 4 or 5 i hit them really quickly. I can run wide open on level 5 and my egt's will not exceed 1150 degrees. The people at edge said the most boost i should run is about 31 psi. If it was safe i would run it at 36+ all of the time!
I would pee my pants to get that much boost. I am getting about 32-34 psi and it won't hurt a thing. If you do wanna lower it try putting on your stock air box, it does plenty good anyway. IMO when you start running over 40 that is when you lose life, but you got tons of power. I've bounced off 35 psi but I can't keep it.
Not getting over 1150 degrees is good, I get up to 1500 at times but I don't hang them there long.
With that varible turbo its should only put out that much when its needed, so let up on the skinny pedal a bit and it will come down. IMO I bet your ok with what happening.
I would hate to put that stock airbox back on, I love my MAC intake it is so sweet. I think I am going to put a muffler on to add a little back pressure. I have reached boost levels as high as 38 psi, but never for more than a second. I can keep it at 35-36 psi if I keep my foot into it. Thanks for your reply.
